We spoke to Jeffrey ahead of the Global Sustainability and ESG Awards about his involvement and thoughts for the future of sustainability.

What inspired you to get involved with the Global Sustainability Awards?

I was inspired to serve as a judge for the Global Sustainability Awards because it is an opportunity to shine a light on the best sustainability practices. I know first-hand what recognition can do for a team working to prove value in their organisation.

I also value the sense of community this award program brings.

The judging panel brings together a diverse group of experiences from across industries – and that kind of cross-sector collaboration is essential to moving the needle and bringing expertise from across the spectrum.

What importance do the Global Sustainability Awards have to the industry?

I see the Global Sustainability Awards as a platform for driving progress and accountability. Participation in the award program also shows a commitment to transparency in sustainability.

I also believe the awards program does more than recognise excellence – it inspires leaders to raise their ambitions. It encourages organisations to go beyond regulatory compliance, understanding that true impact comes from aiming higher and embedding sustainability into the core of their strategy.

What trends do you think will impact the future of the sustainability industries?

From my perspective, a few key trends that will likely shape the future of sustainability include:

The rising importance of a business lens on sustainability: Sustainability is evolving from a standalone goal to a central guiding principle for organisations. Leaders are increasingly working across departments – finance, operations, R&D, HR and beyond – to embed sustainable thinking throughout the business, breaking down silos to create systemic impact.

Adopting a circular approach: Linear models are quickly giving way to more circular approaches, with strategies increasingly grounded in data to drive operational efficiency, reduce emissions and even delight customers with solutions they did not expect along the way.

At Merck Life Science, for example, we are not just working to eliminate waste from our portfolio but reimagining waste as a valuable raw material. This shift enables us to support the development of next-generation treatments and therapies, aligning sustainability innovation with customer needs.

Moving from pledges to progress with industry collaboration: When you take a data-driven approach and systematically embed sustainability into your business, you have taken one step. But for greater impact, you must bring your customers and suppliers with you, supporting them in adopting sustainable practices.

To accelerate that shift, companies will increasingly share knowledge and resources and work collaboratively to reduce environmental impact and turn strategy into action that translates into a competitive advantage.

Closing the trust gap in reporting to earn stakeholder trust: The trust gap in sustainability reporting should prompt us to reassess, as closing that gap is critical to earning the trust of stakeholders and crucial to business success. Leaders will increasingly focus on the quality and integrity of the data they put forward.

This means the methodology for collecting, measuring and analysing data will be documented – and the process will be audited to validate the integrity of the data and approach.

As such, we will see a growing focus on improving data quality and infrastructure to unlock AI’s full potential.

What qualities do winning entries possess?

For me, a standout entry must demonstrate measurable impact — concrete results validating a genuine commitment to sustainable operations and a responsible approach to doing business.

I also value creativity and innovation. Some of the most compelling initiatives I have seen were sparked by unconventional ideas that evolved into transformative sustainability programs.

When these initiatives are thoughtfully integrated into an organisation’s core business strategy and contribute to broader environmental goals, they become powerful examples of what purposeful innovation can achieve.

Ultimately, I am looking for entries that not only deliver results but can also inspire others across the industry by pushing boundaries and proving that sustainable progress is possible and scalable.

What advice would you give individuals or companies aspiring to win this award in the future?

I encourage anyone aspiring to win an award to focus on showcasing efforts that have fostered internal and external collaboration and demonstrate how cross-functional teams, partners and communities can come together to drive sustainability forward.

Highlighting a clear commitment to advancing sustainability goals – not just in isolated projects but as a core part of your business strategy – is also essential.

Also, your submission should emphasise measurable, real-world impact. Judges are looking for outcomes, not just intentions.

Show how your initiatives are delivering transformative change beyond incremental sustainability targets. That is what turns a good entry into an award-winning one.
