January is a time for new beginnings and this month we look into the new chapters of sustainability execs from The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong (HKEX)

Job From: The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong (HKEX) - Group General Counsel

Job To: The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong (HKEX) - Group Chief Sustainability Officer

The Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX) is one of Asia's largest and the world's 9th largest stock exchanges by market capitalization as of August 2024. Founded in 1891 as the Association of Stockbrokers in Hong Kong, it has evolved into a crucial financial hub connecting international investors with mainland Chinese companies.

HKEX is owned by Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX), which became the world's largest bourse operator by market capitalization in 2021. The exchange operates under Hong Kong's distinct regulatory framework, allowing greater access to foreign investors compared to mainland Chinese exchanges.

The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong (HKEX) has broken new ground by appointing its first ever CSO. As of 1 January 2025, Paul Chow is heading up the sustainable operations of HKEX, which is the world’s ninth largest stock exchange by market cap, at US$4.06tn.

Paul’s new role as CSO will be performed in addition to his previous role as Group General Counsel, and he promises to drive the development of the group’s sustainability in accordance with its long-term goals.

Announcing his new role on LinkedIn, Paul said: “Sustainability is a topic which I deeply resonate with, and I’m eager to see and further develop the positive impact HKEX and our community can make together.”

It’s safe to say that Paul’s ‘in’ tray will be full upon his arrival in January. HKEX has committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2040, and has launched the ESG Academy, which he will now be responsible for overseeing.
