Inside Mondelēz’s Circularity, Sustainable Cocoa & ESG Goals

Mondelēz International has published its 2025 Snacking Made Right report.
The document details progress across sustainable sourcing, climate targets and packaging circularity.
The company operates in more than 150 countries.
According to the report, Mondelēz generated net revenues of around US$38.5bn in 2025, demonstrating the scale of its global operations and the potential impact of its sustainability commitments across international markets.
Cocoa Life reaches full coverage
The Cocoa Life programme now covers approximately 100% of cocoa volume sourced for the company's chocolate business.
The initiative works with more than 257,000 registered farmers across cocoa-growing regions.
The programme focuses on forest protection and restoration alongside sustainable cocoa sourcing.
Mondelēz is a founding member of the TogetherCocoa Foundation, which aims to address systemic challenges within the cocoa supply chain.
The company is pursuing an enhanced enterprise-wide sourcing strategy for cocoa.
This includes securing supply through geographic flexibility and large-scale farming operations that can adapt to changing climate conditions.
Partnerships with food-tech start-ups could develop ingredients such as lab-grown cocoa.
Mondelēz is also investing in enhanced crop forecasting processes designed to improve supply accuracy and reduce waste throughout the procurement cycle.
"Focus, innovation and impact at scale have always been at the heart of our sustainability work," says Christine Montenegro McGrath, SVP Chief Impact & Sustainability Officer, Mondelēz International.
"Ever humble, but determined, we remain focused on contributing to the future of more sustainable snacking and delivering sustainable business growth."
Climate and water targets exceeded
Mondelēz continues to reduce its environmental footprint through local sustainability initiatives and global partnerships.
The company reports that approximately 100% cocoa volume for chocolate is now sourced through Cocoa Life.
This contributes to progress against a 2030 target to reduce end-to-end CO₂e emissions by 35% against a 2018 baseline.
The company also exceeded a target of a 10% reduction in absolute water usage in priority sites by 2025.

According to Mondelēz, the company realised an approximately 18% reduction versus the 2018 baseline.
This performance surpasses the original 10% commitment and demonstrates accelerated progress on resource efficiency.
Christine has updated smallholder programmes to align with evolving regulatory landscapes and consumer expectations.
The modernised engagement could strengthen resilience in the cocoa sector and support farmer livelihoods.
Recycled plastic deployment expands
The company has introduced recycled content packaging for Cadbury in Australia.
This forms part of its commitment to a more circular economy for plastic.
The procurement strategy has enabled an annual reduction of around 1,000 tonnes of virgin plastic across the European market.
The shift moves towards sourcing more recycled plastic materials.
"Our path forward is grounded in long-term, sustainable business growth – shaping, creating and accelerating the future of snacking for generations of consumers to come," adds Dirk Van de Put, Chair & Chief Executive Officer, Mondelēz International.
"We remain focused on innovating with excellence, implementing long-term structural actions intended to enhance business resilience, embedding sustainability into our everyday work and delivering long-term value for our many stakeholders."
Mondelēz has completed a transition from sourcing rigid plastic trays to procuring alternatives that contain approximately 80% recycled plastic.
This applies across several European flagship brands. The achievement contributes to progress against the company's 2030 recycled plastic content target.
Mondelēz aims to deploy these packaging improvements at scale across major European markets.
The targeted markets include the UK, France, Spain, Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
The company has also joined The 100+ Accelerator. The initiative provides access to eco-entrepreneurs to further scale systemic environmental solutions.
This could accelerate circularity innovations within the supply chain and create new pathways for sustainable packaging development.
