2024: A Year of Sustainability Magazine Covers
The year 2024 brought everything from AI integration to nature in the sustainability landscape, and Sustainability Magazine has covered it every step of the way.
We’ve taken a look back at the covers of our 2024 issues.
January
Cover star Natalya Makarochkina, Schneider Electric’s Senior Vice President, Secure Power Division, explored how AI is disrupting the data centre space and how data centre design and operations need to change.
“There is no argument whether we’ll have AI or not. When we talk about AI and IoT, then we’ll also talk about a totally different new landscape,” she says.
February
Fredrika Klarén, Head of Sustainability at Polestar, takes February’s cover with a look at how the EV giant can expand to support clean energy infrastructure around the world.
Fredrika explains: “I think there’s an inherent fear of change in traditional industries, not only automotive but all industries.”
March
Cindy Perettie, Executive Vice President and Global Head, and Chris McDonald, Global Head of Technical Operations at Kite, a Gilhead company, starred on March’s cover.
The experts explored how the company develops world-class lymphoma treatment alongside sustainable manufacturing and delivery.
“We’re the only company that has end-to-end standalone research and development, manufacturing and commercialisation of a potentially curative treatment,” says Cindy.
March also brought Sustainability Magazine’s Top 100 Women supplement where Walmart’s Kathleen McLaughlin, Google’s Kate Brandt and Microsoft’s Melanie Nakagawa topped the leaderboard.
April
April’s cover was taken by Chad Wilkerson, Director of Sustainability and Infrastructure Sourcing at T-Mobile with a look at how the company is moving towards net zero.
He explains: “Part of our strategy involved making our network as sustainable as possible, and that’s where we look at how we’re powering that network.”
May
Mark Jones, Chief Sustainability Officer at THG, stars on May’s cover with an exploration of sustainability in the ecommerce industry.
“Getting our roadmaps and targets assured by SBTi, who are dedicated and align to the latest climate science, indicates to others out there how serious we are,” he says.
June
In June, cloud and 5G dominated the conversation with Faith Taylor, Senior Vice President of Sustainability, ESG and Impact officer at Kyndryl, and Blessing Makumbe, VP and Head of Cloud Software and Services at Ericsson UK and Ireland, taking the cover.
Faith explains: “Organisations migrating from on-premises network hardware to cloud-based services can decrease related carbon emissions between 78% and 96%.”
July
The Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games took the world by storm in July, and Sustainability Magazine explored making big events carbon neutral with Sam Booth, Sustainability Director and Event Specialist at AEG Europe.
He says: “You have to believe it’s possible, because otherwise none of us gets out of bed in the morning, but a brutal answer is that it’s not possible right now.”
August
Seven-time Formula 1 World Championship winner Lewis Hamilton takes August’s cover after his record-breaking ninth win at Silverstone for a conversation with Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1’s Head of Sustainability Alice Ashpitel.
“We’ve got a group of engineers here who love two things – winning and complex problems. And what’s a more complex problem than sustainability?”
August also brought Sustainability Magazine’s Top 250 Companies 2024 supplement where Iberdrola, Schneider Electric and IKEA topped the leaderboard.
September
Kevin Dunckley, Chief Sustainability Officer at HH Global, stars on September’s cover with a look at how firms can improve productivity and cut Scope 3 emissions.
He says that sustainability “gives you a spring in your step and makes you want to leap out of bed – there’s so much to do.”
October
Olivier Blum took October’s cover as Schneider Electric’s EVP Energy Management, just before his promotion to CEO.
He shared insight on building the company to become an influential leader in sustainability theory and in practice. “Our passion is always to understand what it will take for a company to achieve their net zero goals,” Olivier explains.
November
New York City is the focus of November’s cover with Andrew Kimball, President and CEO of the NYC Economic Development Corporation taking centre stage to explore its Green Economy Action Plan and harbour revamp.
“No matter the season, New York City is experiencing the impacts of a warming planet,” Andrew explains.
December
Philippine de T’Serclaes, Chief Sustainability Officer at Dassault Systèmes stars on December’s cover with a look into the true impact of a Chief Sustainability Officer.
“While many companies care about sustainability, they don’t necessarily know how to transform their business, what steps to take or which solutions will help them accelerate their efforts to achieve these goals,” she explains.
