Biffa's ‘What if you could unlock value from manufacturing waste?’ guide examines manufacturing waste through production & highlights value opportunities

Managing waste effectively is paramount for manufacturers.

As the industry drives towards a sustainable future and seeks competitive edges, effective waste strategies are now vital for comprehensive organisational development.

With escalating costs and fresh legislation like Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), embracing economic circularity through waste management is becoming a necessity.

Circularity enhances both sustainability and cost effectiveness, by reducing the amount of materials sourced and bought.

Unlocking the value of waste management however isn't easy, which is why sustainable waste management company Biffa has released a comprehensive guide for manufacturers.

The guide ‘What if you could unlock value from manufacturing waste?’ seeks to assist manufacturers in maximising value from their waste, achieving both their sustainability and commercial objectives.

Addressing modern manufacturing challenges

The backdrop of evolving regulations and industry shifts, like EPR — which requires manufacturers to financially handle their packaging waste — adds financial and operational pressures.

Challenges such as increased production costs, supply chain disruptions and talent shortages compound these issues, pushing many manufacturers to prioritise profitability over sustainability — but these objectives are not mutually exclusive.

According to a Biffa and YouGov survey, 67% of manufacturers prioritise revenue generation while 65% focus on reducing costs, often relegating sustainability in their list of priorities despite its financial advantages in the long run.

“Manufacturers play a vital role in the UK supply chain and economy at large but, as our studies show, they’re caught in a bind protecting the bottom line over sustainability even though the two aren’t mutually exclusive," says Gavin Williams, Managing Director of Specialist Services at Biffa.

"For example, businesses can earn rebates from recyclables while lowering the volume of general waste by segregation – and therefore the number of collections – reducing transport spend.

"The innovation to unlock change ranges in complexity, and our embedded experts are key to finding the solution."

Introducing manufacturing waste solutions

Biffa has launched its Manufacturing Waste Solutions service in response to these industry challenges.

The service leverages the expertise of sector-specialised professionals who scrutinise the inner workings of a company—its inputs, outputs and culture.

Identifying waste hotspots and operational inefficiencies is a key part of this process.

The analysis begins with a comprehensive, data-driven audit of the manufacturing process, which helps develop a customer-focused improvement plan.

This plan not only promises measurable cost savings but also enhances value across the first two years—proving its worth before any contractual commitments are cemented.

“Manufacturers can rely on our data and specialist expertise, scale, and facilities to simplify not just the end-to-end waste management process but also unlock value," adds Gavin.

"We’re dedicated to supporting the sector’s continuous improvement and long-term success.”
