Coca-Cola Florida's Decade of Sustainable Progress

Coca-Cola Beverages Florida is marking a milestone 10-year anniversary, symbolising a decade of sustainable practices, community integration and innovative developments in the state of Florida.
Established in 2015, Coke Florida initiated its sustainable journey from central Florida and expanded rapidly to incorporate operations in both the northern and southern regions within a span of 22 months. Operating in a unique territory stretching from Jacksonville to the Florida Keys, the company caters to more than 21 million residents and 140 million visitors annually with sustainability at its core.
"From the first truck that rolled out of our Tampa facility on May 30, 2015 to today, I am immensely proud of our growth, success and contributions over the past decade," says Troy Taylor, Chairman and CEO of Coke Florida.
"When we set out on this journey, we never said we wanted to be the biggest bottler in the country; we said we wanted to be the best. I often share that our two biggest assets are our brands and our people, and I truly believe that we have the best beverage brands in the world and the best team at Coke Florida."
Innovative infrastructure initiatives
Through strategic investments, Coke Florida has been influential in shaping sustainable infrastructure across various regions. With a focus on environmental responsibility, the company's infrastructure projects have actively contributed to job creation and economic vitality in local communities.
Key developments include a new eco-friendly facility in St. Petersburg and the expansion of several others throughout Florida.
The recent completion of the substantial Tampa Distribution Center and Fleet Facility in Tampa Bay, constructed with local resources, underscores the company's commitment to sustainable and economic practices. The center includes wetlands, solar power stations and biodiversity through the addition of trees and apiaries.
Coke Florida's transportation capabilities have similarly evolved, reflecting the company's status among the largest sustainable private beverage fleets in the United States. By prioritising local partnerships and innovation, the company ensures that sustainability is integrated into every aspect of their logistical operations.
Community and environmental integration
Aligned with a sustainability-first approach, Coke Florida's local engagement and environmental initiatives reach deep into community roots. Their projects are centered around three main pillars:
- Environmental stewardship
- Educational advancement
- Economic empowerment
Notably, their environmental stewardship includes a remarkable reforestation programme leading to the planting of 600,000 trees throughout Florida, while the Sustainability Superheroes initiative equips educators with tools for embedding environmental consciousness into the classroom.
In addition to tree planting, the company's water conservation efforts extend education through workshops and the distribution of rain barrels, motivating thousands toward responsible water use.
"We said we were going to be a part of this community forever and we meant it," Troy says.
"For us, it's not just serving the best beverages to our consumers, not just being great partners to our customers, but also being an integral part of the fabric of the community each day."
Empowering through education and housing
Education is a critical component of Coke Florida's community strategy, demonstrated through collaborations with entities like Boys & Girls Clubs and Big Brothers Big Sisters. Their dynamic contributions include technology grants, digital literacy training and full tuition scholarships aimed at students from economically challenged backgrounds.
The Refreshing Minds Scholarship℠ rolled out in 2023, allocating US$2.8m over 10 years to cover complete tuition costs for aspiring scholars, offers transformative opportunities to deserving students.
Reflecting an awareness of housing stability's role in economic opportunity, Coke Florida sustains a long-term partnership with Habitat for Humanity, actively involved in constructing homes and supporting communities financially and through extensive employee volunteering.
"We have big plans for the future, and we're just getting started," Troy says.
