Comcast faces federal probe into DEI under the Trump administration, prompting restructuring while maintaining inclusivity and corporate responsibility

Comcast, the parent company of NBC, is currently under federal investigation for its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and practices.

The investigation, led by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), was initiated following a directive from the Trump administration.

FCC’s stance on DEI practices

Comcast has publicly highlighted its commitment to DEI, particularly in its hiring, training and programming efforts.

The company has invested heavily in promoting inclusion across its operations, noting on its corporate website that it has spent US$18bn on "diverse Tier 1 suppliers" since 2010.

Comcast offers over 100 diverse networks on Xfinity platforms and has provided more than 18,000 hours of diverse on-demand and online programming since 2018.

The company states: "DEI is not a program — it is a central element of our credo and our DNA."

Brendan Carr, FCC Chairman

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr informed Comcast’s Chief Executive Officer Brian Roberts of the investigation in a letter, stating: "I expect that this investigation into Comcast and its NBCUniversal operations will aid the commission's broader efforts to root out invidious forms of DEI discrimination across all of the sectors the FCC regulates."

The investigation into Comcast follows a broader push by the Trump administration to scale back DEI initiatives.

Several executive orders have led to the reduction or elimination of DEI programmes across federal agencies, resulting in thousands of job losses.

In a related development, PBS recently announced the closure of its DEI-focused division following a US$20bn lawsuit filed by the administration.

CBS's parent company, Paramount Global, has also been named in a lawsuit concerning an October 2024, 60 Minutes interview with then Vice President, Kamala Harris.

In December 2024, President Donald Trump secured a US$15m defamation settlement from ABC News and has vowed to pursue further legal action against major media outlets, which he has accused of bias.

Comcast’s structural changes

Comcast is undergoing a major restructuring with the upcoming launch of SpinCo, a new cable entity that will include MSNBC, CNBC, USA Network, E!, Oxygen, SYFY and the Golf Channel.

Mark Lazarus, previously chairman of NBCUniversal’s TV and streaming divisions, has been appointed to lead SpinCo.

Comcast will keep NBC and NBC News, while its streaming service ‘Peacock’ will continue under the leadership of NBCUniversal Entertainment and Studios Chair Donna Langley and NBCUniversal Media Group Chair Matt Strauss.

Reports suggest he is considering shifting some opinion programming to daytime slots, a move that could result in pay cuts for longstanding hosts.

NBCUniversal’s Pivot to Streaming

While NBC and Telemundo will remain with Comcast, NBCUniversal Chief Mike Cavanagh has stated that the company is prioritising streaming partnerships over mergers.

Brian explains: "When you look at our assets, talented management team, and balance sheet strength, we are able to set these businesses up for future growth.

"With significant financial resources from day one, SpinCo will be ideally positioned for success and highly attractive to investors, content creators, distributors and potential partners."

Comcast’s continued commitment to DEI

Comcast’s operations, including NBC and Telemundo’s local TV stations, are regulated by the FCC, which issues broadcast licences for public airwaves.

A spokesperson for the company states: "We have received an inquiry from the Federal Communications Commission and will be cooperating with the FCC to answer their questions.

“For decades, our company has been built on a foundation of integrity and respect for all of our employees and customers."

The media industry’s approach to DEI remains a contentious issue, with major players navigating both political and regulatory pressures.

As Comcast moves forward with its restructuring, its DEI commitments and sustainability initiatives will likely remain a focal point in the broader conversation about corporate responsibility and inclusivity.
