Dr Davidson Lütkenhaus, Vice President Global Sustainability & Innovation Director at Diageo, shares how inclusion and diversity can fuel innovation

Throughout my career, I’ve found one truth remains constant: innovation is the engine that drives progress. Yet, too often - especially most recently - many overlook inclusion and diversity, as a catalyst that propels sustainable innovation.

Having navigated the complexities of global leadership while facing the unique challenges that come with being part of an underrepresented group, I understand firsthand how different perspectives and lived experiences can drive breakthrough thinking. The reality is that the most groundbreaking innovations emerge not from homogeneity but from the collision of diverse experiences, perspectives, and ideas. The future belongs to those who dare to be different and who foster environments where others can do the same.

The connection between inclusivity and innovation is not just theoretical; it is supported by data, real-world examples, and lived experiences. When organizations incorporate diverse thinking and experiences into their innovation strategy, they unlock the kind of transformative thinking that fuels long-term success. Here are six reasons why:

1. Unique Perspectives Drive Breakthrough Solutions: A team composed of individuals from different cultural backgrounds, gender identities, abilities, and lived experiences will naturally approach challenges from multiple angles. This cognitive diversity reduces blind spots and leads to faster problem-solving, helping companies stay ahead of the curve. Homogeneous teams, on the other hand, risk reinforcing existing biases, ultimately limiting their ability to think beyond the status quo.

2. Broader Customer Base, Better Market Fit: Those who prioritize inclusion are better positioned to create solutions that resonate with diverse markets. A product designed by a team that reflects the broad spectrum of consumers it's trying to reach is far more likely to succeed in an increasingly globalized world. Whether it’s inclusive design in tech, sustainable solutions for emerging economies, or product innovations tailored to underrepresented communities, diverse teams are more attuned to a variety of consumer needs.

3. Creativity Thrives in Inclusive Environments: Innovation flourishes when people feel safe to share unconventional ideas. A culture of inclusion empowers individuals to think outside the box, challenge assumptions, and take creative risks. Research shows that psychologically safe workplaces valuing diverse voices yield higher levels of innovation and performance.

4. Groupthink Is the Enemy of Progress: When everyone in the room thinks alike, the risk of groupthink skyrockets. Organizations that fail to integrate diverse perspectives into their innovation processes often miss critical insights, leading to stagnation or, worse, obsolescence. By fostering an environment where dissenting opinions are encouraged, we can challenge outdated norms and push the boundaries of what is possible. Try it!

5. Faster Adaptation in a Changing World: The business landscape is shifting at an unprecedented pace. Companies that fail to innovate risk being left behind. An inclusive workforce brings with it a multitude of perspectives that help organizations pivot quickly in response to change whether it’s emerging market trends, technological disruptions, or sustainability challenges. Simply put, adaptability is the byproduct of diversity.

6. Empathy as a Competitive Advantage: At its core, inclusion is about fostering a culture in which people of all backgrounds feel a sense of belonging. Empathy is not just a moral imperative; it’s a competitive advantage and more engaged teams and stronger stakeholder relationships, cultivate more innovative solutions.

Inclusion and Diversity Should Be a Strategy, Not Just a Checklist

Inclusion and diversity work best when they’re part of a thoughtful, long-term strategy—not just a compliance task. When inclusivity is truly embedded, it supports innovation, resilience, and stronger organizational culture. Being committed to inclusive practices helps build a foundation for sustainable success. Organizations that value inclusion and diversity as a driver of creativity and progress are better positioned to adapt and lead. Real inclusion takes intention and care, not quick fixes.

The Future Belongs to the Bold

History has shown us that those who challenge the status quo, who refuse to accept the world as it is and instead dare to reimagine it, are the ones who shape the future. Innovation is fuelled by those who are willing to stand out, to break barriers, and to push boundaries. But no one can do it alone. Organizations must actively create spaces where all individuals, regardless of background, can bring their authentic selves to the table and contribute to something greater than themselves.

For those of us who have lived the experience of being ‘different’ in corporate environments, we know that true innovation happens when we lean into our uniqueness rather than suppress it. So, let’s be bold. Let’s build cultures that not only embrace diversity but actively leverage it as a strategic advantage. Because the future belongs to those who dare to be themselves and who create spaces where others can do the same, one innovation at a time.

Dare to be you and let’s transform the world of innovation by prioritizing inclusivity one idea at a time.
