BMW Group & Neste: Proving Renewable Fuels are Just as Good
BMW Group has partnered with Neste to use Neste MY Renewable Diesel for the initial fill of new diesel vehicles it manufactures in Germany.
This renewable fuel is crafted entirely from renewable raw materials and seamlessly integrates into any diesel engine without the need for modifications.
“We are grateful for BMW’s trust in us, and we are looking forward to this cooperation,” says Joerg Huebeler, Head of Market Development EU & APAC, Transport & Industry at Neste.
“Renewable diesel plays an important role in the transformation towards sustainable mobility globally.
“The first filling of BMW cars in Germany with Neste’s renewable diesel allows customers to experience firsthand that significant GHG emission reductions with renewable diesel are possible without any impact on the vehicle performance.”
What is Neste MY Renewable Diesel?
Neste's fuel is derived from its patented process known as NEXBTL technology, which transforms renewable oils and fats into high-quality diesel.
This process involves the pretreatment of renewable raw materials to eliminate impurities, followed by hydrodeoxygenation to produce a pure hydrocarbon, which is then isomerised to yield the final renewable diesel product.
Neste stands as the world's largest producer of renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel.
In 2023, Neste's innovations assisted its clients in reducing their greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 10 million tonnes, equivalent to more than 4.3 million road cargo trips from Rome to Stockholm.
This cleaner diesel alternative can curb greenhouse gas emissions by up to 95%, a figure based on the European market and EU Renewable Energy Directive (EU RED) methodology.
BMW Group's sustainability efforts
BMW Group, encompassing the brands BMW, Mini, BMW Motorrad and Rolls-Royce, has consistently been at the forefront of environmental consciousness.
“Sustainability and economic success go hand in hand at the BMW Group,” says Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management at BMW.
“As a premium manufacturer, we have the ambition to lead the way in the area of sustainability.”
The automotive giant has set ambitious targets to halve CO₂ emissions from product use by at least 50% by 2030 compared to 2019, addressing the significant role of vehicle utilisation, which accounts for 70% of its carbon footprint.
Notably, BMW Group anticipates that half of its global sales will comprise fully-electric vehicles by 2030.
Trailblazing since 1973, BMW Group was the first car maker to introduce an environmental officer within its organisation.
It has continuously set benchmarks for the industry's approach to sustainability.
Since 2006, BMW has slashed emissions per vehicle produced by more than 70% and is now set to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by an additional 80% between 2019 and 2030.
In an effort to further minimise its environmental impact, the company ensures all externally sourced electricity has been from renewable sources since July 2020, with ongoing strategies to reduce Scope 3 emissions throughout its value chain.
