Electronics: How OPPO Hit its Climate Targets Early

OPPO's 2024 Sustainability Report looks to set a benchmark for environmental responsibility and technological innovation in the global telecommunications sector.
Achieving its peak carbon emissions target in 2022 — two years ahead of schedule — OPPO is taking a proactive approach to climate goals and sustainable business practices.
The report’s release coincided with the 54th World Environment Day.
It details OPPO’s progress in emissions reduction, product innovation, community engagement and corporate governance, offering valuable insights for industry peers and partners.
Early achievement of climate targets
OPPO’s operations reached peak carbon emissions in 2022, surpassing its original climate target by two years.
Evidence of its commitment to sustainability is a 3.2% year-on-year reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions in 2024, a figure equated to the annual carbon sequestration of more than 514,000 mature trees.
Its Scope 3 emissions fell by 9.3% compared to the previous year, reflecting the effectiveness of OPPO’s collaborative approach with its partners.
In the report, Tony Chen, Founder, President and CEO of OPPO, says: "OPPO is steadfastly dedicated to sustainable development. The Company pledges to attain carbon neutrality across its operations by the year 2050.
"Parallel to its unwavering commitment to technological innovation, OPPO is resolutely dedicated to contributing to the global agenda on carbon neutrality."
Sustainable product lifecycle and packaging innovations
OPPO’s green product strategy has resulted in lighter packaging across its smartphone range and the integration of recycled materials derived from plant residues such as sugarcane and bamboo.
In 2024, its lightweight packaging initiative reduced paper usage by approximately 10 tonnes per million units, preserving an estimated 200 trees.
In Europe, recycled content in packaging increased from 45% to 55%.
Engineering improvements, like the 360-degree Damage-proof Armour Body in the OPPO A3 Pro, have enhanced product durability, reduced waste and extended device lifespans.
Community engagement and e-waste initiatives
In partnership with the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), OPPO expanded its ‘Generation Green’ electronic waste awareness programme in India.
The initiative reached more than one million college students across 476 institutions, collecting more than 10,000 kg of e-waste.
More than 5,000 student interns supported local sustainability activities, including awareness sessions, e-waste art installations and Green Day events.
“Driven by our brand renewal – ‘Make Your Moment’, OPPO will propel sustainability to create an impact through green innovation and responsible technology,”
OPPO’s facilities in India and Dongguan contributed to environmental conservation by recycling and reusing more than 76,000 tonnes of water through advanced wastewater systems.
Globally, OPPO donated more than US$62.6m to public welfare organisations, supporting environmental, educational, cultural and sports projects.
Its partnership with UNESCO saw the donation of 1,000 tablets to support youth education and cultural initiatives in Asia and Africa.
Innovation and accessibility for an inclusive future
Innovation remains central to OPPO’s sustainability strategy.
It reported over 113,000 global patent applications, with 91% relating to inventions.
In 2024, more than 100 AI features were integrated across its smartphone product line, benefitting 50 million users worldwide.
The advancements include accessibility features such as real-time speech-to-text, content magnification and adaptive colour correction, improving usability for people with visual and hearing impairments.
OPPO’s 2024 Sustainability Report offers a compelling narrative for telecommunications businesses seeking to advance their sustainability agendas.
By achieving climate targets ahead of schedule, investing in green product innovation and fostering community engagement, OPPO exemplifies how responsible technology and environmental stewardship can drive meaningful change across the industry.
