The Forest Stewardship Council: The Crucial Role of Forests

Forests play a crucial role in sustaining life on Earth, covering 31% of the planet's land and supporting 80% of terrestrial biodiversity. They provide essential raw materials for everyday products and protect soil, water and climate systems.
However, these vital ecosystems face severe threats from the global climate and biodiversity crises. Sustainable forest stewardship offers a beacon of hope in addressing these challenges.
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is leading the charge in sustainable forestry, offering a credible solution trusted by NGOs, consumers and businesses worldwide. With more than 150 million hectares of certified forests, FSC is at the forefront of promoting healthy and resilient forests for all.
The nonprofit organisation provides a framework for responsible forest management, balancing environmental, social and economic perspectives. FSC's standards and certification process help forest managers, smallholders and governments ensure thriving forest ecosystems while safeguarding the livelihoods of forest communities.
“If we are to tackle the crisis and prevent its worse effects, we need to support forest stewardship,” says Maria Wowro, Programme Manager of Climate & Ecosystem Services Programme at FSC International.
“It is our best chance to maintain resilient forests that sustain communities, workers and businesses.”
Responsible forest management practices yield numerous environmental benefits, including preserving natural landscapes, protecting biodiversity and maintaining vital carbon sinks. These efforts are crucial in combating climate change and preserving ecosystem integrity.
The social benefits of responsible forest management
Beyond environmental impacts, sustainable forestry also brings significant social and cultural benefits.
“Responsible forest stewardship can be a major boon for the rights of indigenous peoples by facilitating the identification and upholding of their rights of land ownership, use of land and access to resources the land may provide,” Jorge Matallana, Manager of Climate & Ecosystem Services at FSC International, explains.
“In addition, it also benefits worker protections by requiring companies to uphold the strict principles and rights of workers.”
FSC's approach to sustainable forestry extends to worker protections, actively monitoring forest managers and companies to ensure compliance with strict principles and workers' rights. This includes adherence to International Labour Organization standards.
Supporting corporate sustainability goals
For companies looking to engage with forest stewardship, FSC offers innovative solutions like the Verified Impact programme. This initiative connects forest stewards with companies, providing high-integrity data on ecosystem services.
“The first step is for companies and forest stewards to find each other — this can be done through certification schemes, environmental consultancies or through other networks,” Jorge says.
“Then both companies and forest stewards can discuss and develop a collaboration, such as a financial investment to support positive forest management activities.”
Maria adds: “Our own FSC Verified Impact solution provides ecosystem service verification, connecting forest stewards and companies, where forest stewards can obtain high-integrity data and companies have the chance to collaborate and invest in those projects.
“The data is independently audited by a third-party certification body and uploaded on a public dashboard to ensure transparency and market trust in the forest project. For companies, this means they can contribute and help develop forest projects worldwide – particularly to optimise their forest value chains.”
FSC Verified Impact focuses on seven ES categories:
- Biodiversity
- Carbon
- Water
- Soil
- Recreation
- Culture
- Air quality
“As businesses face increasing pressure from consumers, investors and regulators to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability, the need for credible sustainability certifications has never been greater,” Maria explains.
“Forest certifications can serve as independent validation that a company’s environmental and social claims are credible, verifiable and aligned with global standards.
Jorge continues: “We believe that FSC provides the best and most scalable path for businesses and governments to tackle the negative impacts created in forest operations and build on their legacies by promoting environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world’s forests.”
