How Start-Up theion could Change Batteries in Germany

Berlin-based start-up theion has successfully raised US$15.2m in Series A funding.
This financial boost is intended to fast-track the company's advancement of its innovative crystal sulphur batteries.
The funding round, led by Team Global with participation from Geschwister Oetker Beteiligungen and Enpal, highlights investor confidence in Germany's role as a leader in sustainable energy storage solutions.
New technologies like this one are expected to significantly enhance Europe's battery market by proposing an alternative to the conventional lithium-ion technology, which could lead to reduced costs and a smaller environmental footprint.
Boosting battery performance
Sulphur, the 16th most common element on Earth, offers a higher energy weight ratio than many current battery materials.
- Three times the energy density of traditional lithium-ion batteries, delivering greater efficiency.
- One-third of the production cost, making battery technology more economically viable.
- One-third of the carbon footprint, addressing sustainability challenges.
This characteristic enables the creation of batteries that are up to three times lighter than lithium-ion alternatives.
However, for sulphur batteries to be commercially viable, they need to surpass 1,000 charge cycles, a challenge that theion intends to meet through its cutting-edge technology.
The company's solution lies in the monoclinic gamma-crystal structure of sulphur.
By refining this structure and utilising patented processes, theion hopes to enhance the durability of these batteries, making them a viable option for various applications.
The future of the battery market
The global demand for batteries is expected to triple by 2030, achieving an annual rate of eight terawatt-hours (TWh).
This is expected to bring an annual market value of US$541bn.

With sulphur being a commonly available and upcycled material, theion's battery technology presents a sustainable, scalable solution to cater to the surging energy demands across multiple industries.
Dr Ulrich Ehmes, CEO of theion, highlights the importance of the firm's latest funding milestone.
"We are thrilled to receive this investment from Team Global, Geschwister Oetker Beteiligungen and Enpal," he says.
"Germany has a long-standing history of pioneering engineering and innovation. We are designing our crystal sulfur battery to position Europe as a leader in sustainable energy storage. Our technology will enable CO2-neutral electric flights, extended EV range and efficient stationary energy storage."

Boosting batteries in Germany
Germany's push for battery independence is crucial to reducing reliance on imported raw materials.
