Chindata Group’s CEO on innovation, leadership and spearheading sustainable AI in China

Mr Wu Huapeng is the CEO of Chindata Group, a leading carrier-neutral hyperscale data centre provider in China and one of the pioneers in building next-generation infrastructure for the AI era.

He joined the company in September 2019 as President of China Operations, where he spearheaded the development of a comprehensive digital economy ecosystem centered around customers, ecosystem partners, government entities and telecommunications operators.

During this period, the group achieved significant breakthroughs in diversifying its customer base, sustaining robust business growth and executing forward-looking strategic initiatives.

In early 2022, Mr Wu took the role of CEO of Chindata Group, assuming full responsibility for the group's strategic planning, ecosystem development and global business expansion.

“Through its decade-long journey, Chindata has built a reputation as one of the region's most forward-thinking data center developers,” he says, “combining engineering excellence, sustainability leadership, and AI-ready to deliver the computing foundation that powers the digital and intelligent future.

“Today, our mission is efficiently converting green electrical power into computing power,” he adds. “We see the conversion of AI and sustainability as the first principle of our business, and our role as building the essential foundation that enables digital productivity and intelligent living for regions, communities and individuals. Our overarching goal is to become the leading AI infrastructure provider in the Asia-Pacific region.”

As CEO, Mr Wu leads Chindata Group's focused commitment to hyperscale data center operations as its core business across both China operations and APAC markets.

Guided by the strategic objectives of customer diversification, geographic diversification and business model diversification, he has strategically advanced the group's positioning within China's "East Data, West Computing" initiative hub nodes, accelerated international expansion and advanced renewable energy research and development, while strengthening collaborative ecosystem partnerships to drive the group's next phase of breakthrough growth.

Now, driven by factors including the pace of change in the AI computing era, Chinese national policies and the need for sustainable development, Chindata Group is undertaking a comprehensive technological upgrade and strategic transformation programme.

“Our transformation represents a deliberate, forward-looking response to structural changes reshaping the data infrastructure market, rather than a reactionary adjustment to market pressures,” says Mr Wu. “Our aim is to position the company at the core of China’s emerging AI and sustainable computing revolution.

“Chindata Group is no longer merely a provider of computing services. It is becoming a strategic partner empowering clients to achieve breakthroughs in AI and sustainability; a national enabler supporting China’s next-generation computing backbone; and a global catalyst driving the green transformation of digital infrastructure.”

Mr Wu is a highly experienced technology leader, with a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree from the Department of Precision Instruments and Mechanical Engineering at Tsinghua University.

Prior to joining Chindata Group, he founded iTechClub, an elite internet technology professional network comprising over 1,500 distinguished internet enterprise members.

He also established 1024 Academy, which became a leading professional talent service platform for China's internet technology sector. Earlier in his career, Mr Wu served as Vice President at Phoenix New Media and CTO of ifeng.com, the news website under Phoenix New Media.
