Joe Sturdy and Ben King, Co-Team Principals at Team Brady

Team Brady is the only E1 team with Co-Team Principals.

Lifelong friends Ben and Joe met while studying Motorsport Engineering at Oxford Brookes University and bring complementary skills to the team.

Ben built a career in the motorsport business, working in strategy and development at McLaren Automotive and Virgin Racing Formula E.

Joe pursued engineering, spending a decade in F1, including as Max Verstappen’s Trackside Power Unit Engineer at Red Bull Racing.

For years, they hoped to collaborate on a project combining their expertise.

Drawn to E1’s mix of cutting-edge motorsport and environmental responsibility, they saw it as the perfect fit.

In 2022, while holding full-time jobs simultaneously, they worked to build an E1 team, securing investors and ultimately leading Tom Brady’s entry.

At Sustainability: Net Zero, Ben and Joe will utilise their competitive spirit to host a joint fireside chat that will explore the power of E1 as a trailblazer in sustainable business.

We recently caught up with Ben and Joe to discover their inspiration for getting involved with our event, their hopes for their fireside chat and their predictions for the future of the sustainability industry.

What inspired you to get involved with Sustainability LIVE: Net Zero?

As Co-Team Principals of an E1 Team, sustainability is a core focus for us, both on and off the track.

We recently did an interview with Sustainability Magazine and were keen to further engage with their initiatives.

Being part of this event felt like a natural extension of that commitment and an opportunity to connect with other leaders in the B2B sphere who are driving sustainability and working towards net zero targets within their organisations.

Provide an overview of what your fireside chat will focus on.

Our fireside chat will explore E1 as an emerging sport and a pioneer in sustainable business.

We'll discuss our journey as Co-Team Principals, highlighting the team’s latest sustainability initiatives, with a particular focus on ocean preservation and the development of new, sustainable marine and mobility technologies. For example, hydro foiling technology and the use of electric power units.

We’ll also examine how these innovations contribute to cleaner urban environments and how sports teams like ours can play a pivotal role in shaping a more sustainable future for the sector.

We’ll also give some intel on what it’s like to work with 7-time Super Bowl Champion, Tom Brady!

What do you hope to achieve through Sustainability LIVE: Net Zero?

We’re excited to raise the profile of E1 and Team Brady among a sustainability-conscious audience, whilst also finding potential corporate partners who see value in using E1 as a platform to both develop and showcase their sustainability initiatives.

Sustainability LIVE: Net Zero is a great opportunity to connect with industry leaders, share ideas and explore new ways to advance our sustainability efforts.

Above all, we’re keen to be part of a community that's committed to making a positive impact.

What emerging trends do you believe will shape the future of sustainability over the next decade?

Over the next decade, sustainability in transportation and alternative energy will be shaped by shifts in investment and innovation across industries.

Currently, major energy companies are pulling back on renewable investment due to high costs and the continued profitability of oil and gas.

For sustainability to be at the forefront, low-carbon technologies need to be more cost-effective and governments need to step up with clear policies and financial support.

Energy-intensive industries, especially transportation, must see sustainability not just as a challenge but as a real opportunity for growth and profitability.

The marine industry can take cues from the rapid progress in automotive electrification (think Formula E, Formula 1 and Tesla).

We’re already seeing a rise in full-electric recreational boats, with challenger brands like Candela and major players like Ferretti, Riva and Wally making moves in this space.

Platforms like the E1 Series help drive awareness by showcasing these innovations in an exciting and engaging way.
