Amcor's Partnership for Fibre-Based Sustainable Packaging

Amcor, a global packaging solutions provider specialising in consumer and healthcare products, announced plans to expand its partnership with Metsä Group, a Finnish forest industry organisation, and G. Mondini, a food packaging equipment supplier.
The partnership centres on a fibre-based tray system designed for protein and chilled ready-meal uses.
Showcasing sustainable packaging solutions
The packaging technology will be displayed at Interpack, Europe's premier packaging exhibition, taking place from 7 to 13 May in Germany.
Amcor's development team has collaborated extensively with G. Mondini to guarantee smooth operation on its Trave Streamline machine for meat and food manufacturers.
This showcase is intended to promote the uptake of fibre-based packaging alternatives.
The packaging comprises a fully integrated fibre-based tray that incorporates a lightweight barrier liner and top web, created specifically for ready-meal applications.
Paolo Mondini, General Manager at G. Mondini, says: "At G. Mondini, we have always believed that truly more sustainable packaging can only succeed if it performs flawlessly on the production line.
"Our collaboration with Amcor and Metsä Group is a perfect example of what happens when machine expertise, barrier technology and fiber innovation come together.
"The result is packaging that upholds the most rigorous food safety requirements, delivers state-of-the-art consumer experience and meets retailer expectations.
"The Trave Streamline running live at Interpack will demonstrate that fibre-based solutions are not just an environmental choice, they are a high-performance one."
Developing fibre-based packaging
Amcor's AmFiber tray and film is designed to safeguard perishable foods and prolong shelf life, addressing growing consumer demand for sustainable materials.
This distinctive packaging format provides brands with improved shelf presence whilst supporting their sustainability objectives.
The tray utilises Muoto, a moulded fibre packaging solution created by Metsä Group's innovation division, Metsä Spring.
This recyclable option is manufactured from renewable wood harvested from northern forests, enhanced by Amcor's suite of sophisticated barrier liners and top-web films to meet various product requirements.
The system can incorporate multiple convenience features including microwaveable, ovenable and easy-peel functionalities.
Antti Valtonen, VP Muoto Project at Metsä Spring, says: "Our collaboration with Amcor began about a year ago and it is highly rewarding to see this partnership – together with the valuable contribution of G. Mondini – now delivering tangible results.
"By combining Muoto's exceptional quality and built‑in sturdiness with excellent barrier performance, we are creating a solution that truly comes to life.
"This collaboration shows how the right partners can bring together performance, reliability and suitability for demanding food applications."
Details of the partnership
The G. Mondini Trave Streamline packaging system allows trays to move through the sealing process with minimised friction, enhancing efficiency during production.
The company's digital printing technology also permits direct customisation of the fibre trays, facilitating distinctive brand differentiation whilst maintaining its natural aesthetic.
The partnership unites Amcor's barrier films, Metsä Group's proficiency in wood processing and G. Mondini's machinery knowledge.
Ilya Syshchikov, Vice President, Global Fibre at Amcor, says: "High-performing packaging requires a fully integrated system, where every element, from tray and barrier liner to top web and machinery, works seamlessly together.
"By collaborating with Metsä Group and G. Mondini, we are creating a complete packaging solution that simplifies implementation, addresses customer challenges and helps brands focus on delivering exceptional products."
