Arrivaâs Martin Wayman: Decarbonising the Transport Sector

Arriva Group is a European passenger transport operator, with 36,200 employees across 11 European countries.
It has announced Martin Wayman as its new Group Sustainability Director, who brings more than 19 years of experience in sustainability strategy and climate action.
Martin’s career history
Martin graduated from the University of Oxford in 2003 with a BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics.
He then spent three years as an Assistant English Language Teacher in Japan, before starting his corporate career as a Corporate Fundraising Intern at Unicef UK.
Across the next few years, he worked as a sustainability consultant, a corporate responsibility consultant and a carbon finance intern in companies around London.
Martin joined EY in 2011, spending five years with the company in its Climate Change and Sustainability Services team.
In these positions, he advised some of the world’s leading organisations on sustainability and corporate responsibility, including luxury brands, UK retailers and global energy companies.
In 2016, Martin became Head of Corporate Responsibility for ISS Facility Services UK, where he created the company’s CR vision and purpose.
He moved to FirstGroup in 2021, where he led the company’s external sustainability disclosures and launched its first science-based carbon reduction targets.
As Group Director of Corporate Responsibility for FirstGroup, he developed and launched its inaugural Climate Transition Plan, which involved balancing growth with managing climate risks within the transport sector.
He then held interim roles at IHG Hotels & Resorts and SSE between 2025 and 2026, heading up each company’s sustainability framework.
His most recent position was Interim Head of Sustainability for Energy Customer Solutions at SSE.
Arriva’s sustainability strategy
Arriva Group delivers 1.5 billion passenger journeys every year, offering local buses, inter-urban commuter coaches, train services and bicycles.
Its sustainability strategy prioritises issues that are important to communities, passengers and the environment.
It plans have zero-emission buses and to manage materials in an efficient manner, working towards its goal of becoming a resource efficient passenger transport operator.
Arriva Group is adopting circular practices and renewable processes and implementing sustainable waste segregation practices.
It is also working on reducing energy usage in its offices and depot buildings, as well as using rainwater to clean its fleet of buses and trains.

About Martinâs new position
At Arriva Group, Martin is returning to the transport sector and will draw upon his experience from his time at FirstGroup.
His work will focus on embedding Arrivaâs strategy into its operations, working on decarbonising its transportation methods and making a positive impact on the environment and communities.
He has vast experience in driving corporate sustainability strategy and regulatory alignment while navigating stakeholder environments and transition plans.
He will bring knowledge in strategy development, stakeholder engagement, ESG compliance and sustainable finance to his new position.
