E.ONās Journey To Decarbonising the Energy Industry

The energy sector is the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, producing approximately 75% of the global total.
To combat this, companies such as E.ON are working to decarbonise the energy industry by installing solar panels and smart metres.
E.ON has been awarded 32nd place in Sustainability Magazine’s Top 250 World’s Most Sustainable Companies 2025.
E.ON’s net zero target
E.ON has set a target to reduce its Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by at least 50% by 2030 compared with its 2019 baseline.
It aims to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 100% by 2040 and its Scope 3 emissions by 100% by 2050.
These targets are in line with the Paris Agreement’s target to limit global warming to 1.5°C compared with pre-industrial levels.
E.ON plans to achieve its targets by making all of its buildings carbon neutral and converting its vehicle fleet to 100% electric.
It aims to reduce emissions from the value chain by encouraging employees to cycle or switch to electric cars and helping its consumers switch to green power solutions like heat pumps and solar panels.
The company has also reduced the amount of single use plastics at its offices and it only uses environmentally friendly cleaning products across all of its UK sites.
Leo Birnbaum, Chief Executive Officer at E.ON, says: “Sustainability is at the heart of our strategy and will be the benchmark for our actions in the future.
āAs playmaker of the green transformation in Europe, the decarbonisation of the energy sector is a key focus to us.ā
Renewable energy
E.ON has been a leader in the renewable energy industry for more than 30 years.
It began building its first UK wind farm in 1991, and has since invested more than £3.3bn (US$4.3bn) in UK renewables.
It aims to bring smarter energy solutions to its consumers, installing smart metres, solar panels, EV chargers and heat pumps.
As of 2024, it has installed solar panels on more than 16,000 homes, helping consumers transition to cleaner energy.
E.ON worked on bringing the technology and infrastructure needed to enable greater renewable capacity to the grid.
In 2019 it shifted its strategy to focus on its consumers, helping them take action for climate and become more sustainable at home and in their communities.
A sense of community
As a leader in diversity and inclusion, E.ON has been recognised in The Inclusive Top 50 UK Employers List for six consecutive years.
It is committed to creating an environment where employees feel valued, respected and a sense of belonging.
E.ON has been a Disability Confident employer since 2017, which ensures that candidates with disabilities receive reasonable adjustments during their application process and employment.
The company runs colleague-led inclusivity networks to provide support in areas such as racial inclusion, gender equality, LGBTQ+, menopause and mental health.
āFor all of us at E.ON, a better energy future isnāt only about cutting carbon and taking action for climate,ā says Chris Norbury, CEO of E.ON UK.
“It’s also about our wider commitment and contribution to the lives of our customers, our colleagues and our communities.”
