Etihad Rail is reshaping logistics across the UAE
Etihad Rail is reshaping logistics across the UAE, connecting cities and ports, streamlining trade and aiming to move 60 million tonnes of cargo by 2030

The UAE is building a rail network project that extends its vision beyond just improving passenger transit; it is poised to revolutionise the nation's freight operations and enhance the sustainability of its supply chain infrastructure.

Linking 11 cities from Al Sila to Fujairah, the railway promises to transform movement with trains reaching speeds up to 200 km/h and passenger services scheduled for launch in 2026.

Even as the spotlight often shines on enhanced commuter experiences, the network's benefits for supply chain sustainability are immense. Operational since 2023, freight services are already reducing road traffic and supporting industrial growth.

Decarbonising freight transport

The freight network represents a pragmatic solution to logistics challenges, delivering significant efficiency gains. Currently, Etihad Rail moves approximately seven million tonnes of granulated sulphur annually from the Shah and Habshan gas fields to the Ruwais port, effectively replacing countless diesel truck journeys.

Projections for 2030 highlight the network's potential to handle up to 60 million tonnes of cargo each year, including construction materials, containers, retail goods and industrial inputs. The capacity of each fully-loaded train to eliminate up to 300 trucks from the roads underscores its environmental advantage.

By cutting CO₂ emissions by up to 80% compared to road transport, Etihad Rail aligns with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 objectives. The system is expected to slash transport-related CO₂ emissions by 21% annually, equating to a reduction of roughly 8.2 million tonnes of CO₂ every year.

Integration with major industrial ports and hubs, such as Jebel Ali, Khalifa Port, KIZAD and Fujairah Port, further solidifies the UAE's status as a pivotal trade and logistics center.

By effectively linking port operations with inland terminals, Etihad Rail supports faster, cleaner and more economical movement of goods across the UAE and to neighboring markets like Saudi Arabia and Oman. Its multimodal transport approach promotes better cargo consolidation, storage and distribution.

Collaborative growth for sustainable logistics

Etihad Rail’s collaboration with DHL Global Forwarding exemplifies its dedication to sustainable logistics. Their 20-year strategic partnership integrates the rail network into DHL’s logistics operations within the UAE.

This cooperation reflects an evolving logistical landscape, incorporating rail as a core strategy for regional transport planning.

Amadou Diallo, CEO for the Middle East & Africa at DHL Global Forwarding, explained at the time: “The UAE’s increasing focus on infrastructural investment in the logistics sector, and DHL Global Forwarding is excited to be part of this journey to support growing capacity requirements through rail freight.”

The partnership enhances cost control, improves asset utilization and delivers more resilient supply chains for UAE businesses. Predictable transit schedules complement economic efficiency, aligning rail solutions with reduced maintenance costs and less environmental impact.

Memoranda of Understanding with logistics operators, such as COSCO’s Abu Dhabi Container Freight Station, promote integration between rail and port services. Such partnerships establish centralized cargo hubs, enabling more efficient goods reception, processing and distribution compared to traditional road-based logistics.

Long-term economic and sustainable impact

The broader implications of Etihad Rail transcend transport, with anticipated annual contributions of AED 3.5bn to the UAE economy by 2030 and an estimated return on investment four times the original investment.

Over 9,000 jobs in operations, engineering, logistics and maintenance underscore its role in economic diversification and workforce development.

During the Abu Dhabi Infrastructure Summit on August 4, an agreement was signed between Etihad Rail and the Abu Dhabi Projects and Infrastructure Centre (ADPIC), marking a commitment to enhance collaboration on capital projects. This deal supports the integration of transport infrastructure, essential for Abu Dhabi’s growth strategy.

The comprehensive network of more than 1,200 km will connect every emirate, laying the groundwork for a more sustainable logistics future even while passenger services remain a significant aspect of the project.
