Formula E & Liberty Global Drive EV Racing into 2048
Formula E is the world’s first all-electric FIA World Championship and the only sport that is certified net zero carbon since inception.
The FIA and Liberty Global have announced a landmark 10 year extension for the ABB FIA Formula E world Championship, securing exclusivity for all electric single-seater racing through 2054.
The extension reflects Formula E’s growth, 20% year-on year since inception, reaching 400 million fans globally.

“It also aligns with our broader goal of increasing global participation and driving more accessible motorsport for all.
“We are delighted to be continuing this journey with Formula E and I look forward to seeing it grow even further, both on and off the track, in the years to come.”
What does the agreement mean for the future of Formula E?
The agreement positions Formula E as the definitive electric motorsport platform for the next three decades, enabling it to accelerate its growth trajectory, attract further investments and pave the way for more sustainable innovation in the wider automotive sector.
Under the current plan Formula E is set to continue its ambitious development strategy for its racing cars.
The plan includes delivering faster top speed, greater acceleration, enhanced aerodynamics and improved tyre performance.
By 2054 professionals expect that EV race cars should be on par with or exceeding performance of other top tier single seat categories.
EV sales in general are expected to hit 40% of the global market by 2030.

Formula E’s newest innovations
At the beginning of 2025 Formula E released the GEN3 Evo car.
The vehicle can go from 0-60mph in just 1.82 seconds, which it is currently 30% faster than a Formula 1 car, hitting 200mph at top speed.
The GEN3 version of the car has a more than 40% energy recovery rate, nearly double the GEN2 vehicle.
With sustainability being the core of the project the tyres are made from 35% recycled materials and the bodywork of the vehicle incorporates recycled carbon fibre and natural fibres.
Lucas di Grassi, a driver, Formula E says: "The purpose is to create a better, cleaner, safer future for mankind with innovation and technology.
“In general, people will naturally go for convenience and necessity, as well as the cheapest, best solution for them.
“So, we need to create technology that fills this gap and serves this purpose, then, the best option will be the most sustainable one – that’s the win-win situation to chase.”
