Food, Hospitality & Energy: How can Industries Decarbonise?

Global commitments are still falling short on what is needed to limit the rise in global temperature to 1.5°C according to the IEA.
It says that in order to stay on the pathway to net zero, massive deployment of energy technologies like renewables, EVS and energy efficient building retrofits are needed.
Further, investments worldwide will need to hit around US$4tr to reach net zero by 2050.
At Sustainability LIVE London 2025, speakers from Müller, Radisson Hotel Group and SSE will explore how decarbonisation is being put into practice on the ground.

What is global decarbonisation?
Decarbonisation refers to the process of reducing or eliminating carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions from activities, with a core focus on minimising the use of fossil fuels.
The World Economic Forum (WEF) has outlined five key things companies should take into consideration when decarbonising:
- Unless a company can measure carbon footprint with precision they will not be able to make targets and create high impact action
- Although quick wins may look good on paper, the route to net zero is extremely complex and long term plans must be set
- AI use is necessary as it enables companies to to find the most precise emission factors, analysing products carbon footprint at a fraction of the cost
- Chief Sustainability Officers must focus on finance, strategy and public affairs, as they need to make a compelling argument of how sustainability projects will benefit a business
- Decarbonisation is not just a social and environmental imperative, it is a key business advantage allowing companies to future proof and face rising climate threats.
Decarbonisation is a long and complex path but if companies take steps to understand the long term benefits, the WEF believes they can create long term success.
What are companies doing to decarbonise?
Companies around the world are implementing decarbonisation strategies company regimes to support the global aim to reach net zero.
Müller
Müller reports that it is making great strides when it comes to decarbonisation progress.
It says that the company now runs using 100% renewable electricity across its manufacturing operations.
Müller has also invested in combined heat and power technology which will improve the company's energy efficiency through recovering heat generated onsite and reusing it within its production process.
By 2035, the company is aiming to reach net zero for its Scope 1 and 2 emissions and Scope 3 by 2050.
Radisson Hotel Group
The Radisson Hotel Group has announced its first two hotels to achieve verified net zero status.
The buildings based in Oslo and Manchester have eliminated Scope 1 and 2 emissions and reduced Scope 3 emissions to a minimum.
Any emissions that were not eliminated were removed with nature based solutions.
The hotels are using 100% renewable energy for all functions from heating, cooling and hot water to the cooking and spa facilities.
SSE
SSE reports that it has several plans to support the global decarbonisation effort.
The company says it plans to create the world’s largest offshore wind farm and is investing US$23.5bn (£17.5bn) into the project.
It also focuses on carbon capture and storage through its Thermal project, with the aim to become the leading provider of flexible thermal energy in the net zero future.
