As demand for digital infrastructure accelerates globally, data centre operators face increasing pressure to balance growth with environmental responsibility.

CyrusOne, a global leader in data centre development and operations, is taking steps to demonstrate that sustainable expansion is not only possible but also profitable.

From energy efficiency and emissions reductions to zero-waste certification and green finance, CyrusOne is embedding sustainability across every level of its business.

The company’s latest milestones in Europe and the US underscore a long-term commitment to climate action and responsible innovation.

Driving sustainable growth in the UK

CyrusOne has announced new plans for facility expansion in London, a key strategic market in its European portfolio.

The development aligns with growing demand for large-scale, resilient digital infrastructure that enables both scalability and energy efficiency.

“This development marks an important step in our European growth journey,” says Matt Pullen, EVP and Managing Director, Europe, CyrusOne.

“We’re thrilled to be announcing our plans for this new facility and continuing our growth in London.

“As demand for digital services continues to accelerate, larger facilities are necessary to provide the economies of scale that customers need, while also ensuring maximum functionality and mitigated risk of downtime.

“The UK market enables us to respond to these requirements, and we look forward to continuing our expansion and supporting the Government to establish the UK as a center of excellence in digital services for technology innovation.”

A zero-waste milestone in Texas

In the US, CyrusOne has achieved a notable sustainability certification at its SAT5 facility in San Antonio, Texas.

The site was awarded Gold certification under the TRUE (Total Resource Use and Efficiency) system, making it the first data centre in Texas to receive this recognition.

“Achieving TRUE certification for zero waste is a testament to our commitment to sustainability and operational excellence,” comments Kyle Myers, Vice President of Environmental, Health, Safety and Sustainability at CyrusOne.

“This milestone reflects our team’s dedication to minimising waste, optimising resources and driving meaningful change at CyrusOne.

“We are proud to be the first data centre in Texas to achieve TRUE certification.”

Cutting carbon while scaling capacity

CyrusOne continues to decouple its business growth from emissions.

Since 2021, the company has achieved a 29% reduction in carbon emissions, despite a 70% increase in business volume.

This progress reflects years of targeted initiatives, including efficiency upgrades, carbon-free electricity contracts and customer-led renewable sourcing.

“While our business has grown 70% since 2021, our carbon emissions have decreased by 29%,” says Eric Schwartz, CEO of CyrusOne, in the company’s sustainability report.

“Through years of efforts like energy efficiency projects, new carbon-free electricity contracts, and our customers procuring their own carbon-free electricity for our data centres, we have demonstrated that growing our data centre footprint doesn’t mean an increased carbon footprint.”

Financing a net zero future

To support its rapid, climate-aligned expansion, CyrusOne has significantly scaled its use of green finance.

In 2024, the company secured US$12.6bn in green and sustainability-linked funding, US$11.2bn of which was tied to its science-based emissions targets.

This strategy provides not only operational capital but also embeds accountability into its climate pathway.

CyrusOne’s 2030 climate neutral goal is backed by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and incorporates both direct (Scope 1) and indirect (Scope 2) emissions.

The company also actively supports its customers’ sustainability reporting with transparent, facility-level environmental data.

Partnering for sustainable infrastructure

Whether through zero-water cooling systems, habitat improvement initiatives or collaboration with regional utilities for renewable energy sourcing, CyrusOne is building environmental resilience into the foundation of its data centre operations.

By aligning business performance with planetary boundaries, the company is positioning itself as a sustainability partner of choice for hyperscale and enterprise customers alike.

As the digital economy grows, CyrusOne is setting a benchmark for how data centre infrastructure can scale without sacrificing environmental integrity.
