Google's South Carolina data centre expansion for AI includes a focus on sustainability, clean energy & local workforce training, says Google's Ruth Porat

Google has announced a US$9bn investment in South Carolina until 2027 - a move that aims to expand its data centre infrastructure while aligning with the growing demand for sustainable technology.

The initiative will see an expansion of Google’s existing Berkeley County data centre campus and support the construction of two additional facilities in Dorchester County.

This development is designed to increase Google’s capacity to deliver AI-driven services and cloud computing.

Strengthening sustainable digital infrastructure

As the need for compute power grows, the focus of this expansion includes infrastructure resilience and sustainability.

The investment could strengthen South Carolina's position as a hub for digital and AI infrastructure, potentially creating new opportunities in the energy and technology sectors.

A defining principle of Google's global data centre operations is sustainability.

Google says it has been carbon neutral since 2007 and has a goal to operate on 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030.

The new facilities in South Carolina are expected to follow this trajectory by integrating renewable power sources and advanced cooling systems intended to minimise water usage.

South Carolina's expanding renewable energy portfolio provides a foundation for this expansion.

The state’s existing infrastructure and connectivity also make it a strategic location for Google’s wider US data network.

This project is part of a series of global investments, with other projects in markets including Belgium and the UK.

AI growth and local partnerships

The investment also includes a focus on workforce training and energy affordability.

“I am pleased to share that Google is investing US$9bn in South Carolina to expand our data centre infrastructure in the state, deliver programmes to protect energy affordability and train the local workforce for careers in the state’s growing tech and energy sector,” says Ruth Porat, President and Chief Investment Officer at Alphabet and Google.

“This investment helps support job growth in South Carolina as it benefits from the upside of AI. Google is proud to build on our 15 years of work in the Palmetto State to help secure its success during the next wave of American innovation.”

Ruth’s comments highlight how the investment is intended to support local job growth.

A new Google.org grant to the Electrical Training Alliance (etA) will integrate AI tools into the alliance’s curriculum.

This initiative aims to help train more than 160 apprentices for careers in the state's technology and energy industries.

By collaborating with regional training bodies, Google aims to create pathways into skilled careers that support the wider AI and data infrastructure ecosystem.

Balancing AI competitiveness and environmental responsibility

Google's investment is a strategic move to reinforce the backbone of its AI and cloud operations across the eastern US.

The new and expanded data centres will provide high-density compute environments required to train and deploy advanced AI models while supporting enterprise workloads.

Beyond the infrastructure itself, the expansion will play a role in supporting Google’s AI ambitions, powering the development of generative AI models and enhancing cloud capabilities.

The announcement follows a series of infrastructure investments by Google across the United States and internationally.

These developments reflect Google’s focus on creating resilient and scalable infrastructure.

By choosing South Carolina for this expansion, Google signals confidence in the state’s ability to support its AI and cloud ecosystem.

The combination of technical innovation, renewable energy and a skilled local workforce could position the Palmetto State to play a leading role in the future digital economy.
