Jaya House Hotels: How Can Luxury Hotels be Sustainable?

For the hotel industry, sustainable operations is a growing priority, with more than 5,000 properties adopting the World Travel & Tourism Council’s Hotel Sustainability Basics.
Jaya House Hotels aims to embed sustainable practices into its business model, with tree planting initiatives and plastic free operations.
Plastic-free tourism
The Jaya House River Park hotel, located in Siem Reap, Cambodia, is a luxury hotel focused on sustainable operations.
The company is a signatory of the Global Tourism Plastic Initiative, led by the UN Environment Programme and the World Tourism Organisation.
The Jaya House River Park hotel has been single-use plastic free since December 2016 and its leaders are aiming to support other hotels on their journey towards becoming plastic free.
This initiative aims to tackle plastic pollution by promoting a shift towards a circular economy of plastics in tourism operations, where plastics never become waste, instead of completely eliminating them.
The hotel company has launched its own range of skincare and body products, called Jaya Organics.
These are packaged in glass containers, in order to reduce packaging waste, with the company aiming to set up an option for customers to refill their empty containers.
The products are made in-house to reduce costs and environmental impact, while cutting overseas transportation pollution.
All of the ingredients used are locally sourced and natural extracts are added to enhance the quality and luxury feel of the products.
Dennis Reinhard, Co-Founder of Jaya Organics, says: “There are a lot of beauty products that we use every day and after a short time, you throw it away which is a huge waste.
“Imagine how much waste we create in a year.
“Following in Jaya River Park’s footsteps, we wanted to do something that was environmentally friendly.”
