Uber, Lucid & Nuro: Electric Robotaxis for Cleaner Transport

Electric vehicles (EVs) produce no tailpipe emissions, unlike their traditional internal combustion engine counterparts.
Autonomous vehicles can help this further, potentially driving more efficiently and reducing energy consumption.
Three industry leaders are collaborating to take autonomous EVs forwards: Uber, Lucid Motors and Nuro.
The initiative is poised to transform urban landscapes with a "next-generation premium global robotaxi programme".
The sustainable vision
The three companies are planning the deployment of more than 20,000 Lucid vehicles equipped with Nuro’s cutting-edge technology.
Over the next six years, Uber aims to reshape ride-hailing services towards an eco-friendly model.
The launch of this programme is expected in a major US city soon.
The role of Lucid Motors
Lucid Motors plays a crucial role in this sustainability-focused project with its Gravity SUV.
This vehicle boasts an impressive range of 450 miles per charge.
Marc Winterhoff, Interim CEO at Lucid, says: “This investment from Uber further validates Lucid's fully redundant zonal architecture and highly capable platform as ideal for autonomous vehicles, and our industry-leading range and spacious well-appointed interiors, as ideal for ridesharing.”
The cars architecture is being designed specifically for safety, providing drivers and passengers with spacious and premium interior.
Nuro's technological edge
The Nuro Driver Level 4 autonomy system is a technology with an established history in the autonomous vehicle sector.
With five years of autonomous driving operations across different US regions, Nuro brings invaluable data and experience to the table, crucial for tackling real-world deployment challenges.
“We believe this partnership will demonstrate what's possible when proven AV technology meets real-world scale,” says Jiajun Zhu, Co-Founder and CEO at Nuro.
Uber’s global platform
Uber adds a lot of value with its vast network.
Operating in 70 countries with 34 million daily trips, Uber's influence hopes to be a catalyst for broad-scale adoption of sustainable mobility solutions.
Uber's CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, says: "Autonomous vehicles have enormous potential to transform our cities for the better.
“We're thrilled to partner with Nuro and Lucid on this new robotaxi programme, purpose-built just for the Uber platform."
