Curtis Stiles, Corporate & Financed Emissions Expert at Watershed, will lead a workshop on implementing AI in sustainability
Using AI for sustainability brings new risks, but can also speed up processes, reduce manual work for sustainability teams and even model climate risks

From collecting accurate data to taking action, sustainability efforts can take a long time to get off the ground.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to close this efficiency gap, but a lack of confidence in these solutions could be holding organisations back.

Sustainability teams often include experts in environmental science, compliance and corporate responsibility, but not necessarily data science or AI.

With this technology bringing new risks, an informed approach to AI use is essential.

The benefits of AI in sustainability

To achieve the benefits and compliance sustainability can bring to businesses, ESG data must be collected, cleaned and validated.

AI can automate data ingestion from multiple systems like ERP, suppliers and utilities alongside identifying anomalies or gaps for more reliable disclosures.

This can help to reduce the manual burden on sustainability teams alongside improving both the accuracy and auditability of sustainability reports.

The data centres behind AI can use large amounts of energy, so careful AI governance is crucial

AI systems can track evolving regulations across jurisdictions and flag risks in near real time.

For example, they can map corporate operations against climate and human rights regulations, ensuring compliance with frameworks such as the EU Green Taxonomy or US SEC climate disclosures.

On top of this, AI can also run simulations to model how climate risks, like floods or extreme heat, will affect corporate assets and operations.

Implementing AI for sustainability

Watershed’s workshop at Sustainability LIVE London 2025 will take leaders through critical building blocks that separate successful AI sustainability initiatives from the rest.

By the session’s end, those taking part will have the foundation of a new sustainability AI roadmap with a clear path forward.

The hands-on workshop will explain how to streamline processes and move from speed to impact, using reliable approaches for AI use that can reveal patterns in data that human analysis could miss.

Setting guardrails with a clear AI governance framework will also be covered, accounting for the energy implications of AI systems and ensuring its use focusses on the most impactful areas.
