Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD is a global leader in sustainable energy technologies.

It was launched as a battery manufacturing company and has since expanded into innovating across the sustainable transportation industry.

Its business operations remain in line with its sustainability initiatives which help the company contribute to global emission reduction targets.

BYD is working towards carbon neutrality across its whole value chain by 2045 and a 50% reduction in the carbon intensity of its own operations by 2030 compared to the base level from 2023.

Its sustainability initiatives are driven by its mission to cool the earth by 1°C.

The company is dedicated to creating a zero-emissions ecosystem in the EV sector through its energy solutions.

Since it was founded in 1995, BYD has removed more than 16 million tonnes of carbon emissions across the world.

About BYD’s Blade Batteries

Each of BYD’s electric cars is powered by its Blade Battery.

The battery is recognised as one of the world’s safest EV batteries thanks to its low-temperature performance and longevity.

It is designed to last for more than 15,000 charge and discharge cycles, exceeding the vehicle’s lifespan, meaning that at end-of-life the batteries can be recycled for use in energy storage or low-speed EVs.

This contributes towards a circular economy by maximising resource use and integrating renewable energy solutions into the supply chain.

The cells within the Blade Battery are arranged in a honeycomb structure, which optimises the strength of the battery and allows it to withstand high levels of force.

Its manufacturing process reduces reliance on scarce resources like nickel and cobalt.

This reduces the ecological damage created from mining techniques.

Recyclable packaging in Thailand

An example of BYD’s sustainability efforts is its package material optimisation project in its Thailand base.

The base generates a large amount of industrial waste through its use of plywood, iron frames and rust-proof bags which are not recyclable.

BYD aims to optimise the packaging system by using recycled steel boxes.

After materials are delivered, a package recycling team will sort the materials and send them back to be reused, reducing the facility’s use of disposable packaging materials and reducing production and disposal costs.

BYD expects that the amount of industrial waste generated at its Thailand base will be reduced by approximately 30-60%.

Zhao Jianping, Chief Sustainability Officer for BYD, says: “BYD is deeply involved in the field of new energy and has been committed to green and sustainable development since its establishment.

“Along the way, BYD has been constantly thinking and practicing, moving forward steadily on the road of paying attention to the destiny of mankind and improving the well-being of relevant parties, and continuously contributing to global sustainable development.”

Optimising wastewater management

BYD is working on efficient wastewater management systems across its facilities.

Its wastewater is classified and treated based on its source and nature – industrial wastewater is collected and treated within the facility’s treatment system, while domestic wastewater is treated through septic tanks and discharged to comply with local standards.

The treatment stations at BYD’s primary operating sites use processes including coagulation precipitation, dissolved air flotation and phosphorus removal.

It monitors key elements including pH levels, chemical oxygen demand and ammonia and nitrogen content to align with pollution monitoring measures.

It has developed an online monitoring system to track wastewater discharge, encourage third parties to inspect wastewater and improve water quality.

These techniques ensure that BYD’s wastewater discharge complies with national laws and regulations.
