How is XPO Prioritising Sustainability in Logistics?

The logistics industry serves as a vital artery for global trade, but the sector is historically a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. As a result, it faces mounting pressure to mitigate its environmental impact.
XPO is adapting its strategy to foster sustainability, demonstrating that it is not necessary to sacrifice efficiency, cost savings or resilience during this transition.
As supply chains encounter climate-related disruptions, businesses are adjusting strategies to build resilience. Increased customer expectations for eco-friendly operations have turned sustainable practices into a prudent business decision.
XPO assists businesses in making this shift by developing solutions for efficient supply chains. Decarbonisation has become a primary focus for international enterprises, particularly those in logistics.
Implementing low emission transport solutions
To reduce environmental impact, XPO introduced the LESS (Low Emissions Sustainable Solutions) programme. This initiative encourages alternative fuels, such as Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), and the deployment of electric vehicles.
The company’s multimodal capabilities allow for environmentally friendly transport methods. Integrating road, rail, sea and river shipping enables shippers to reduce carbon footprints while opening opportunities for alternative fuels.
These commitments resulted in the company receiving the EcoVadis Gold Medal in 2024. This award places XPO within the top 1% of European road transport firms.
The transition to greener fuels remains a cornerstone of the company's long-term strategy. By investing in electric fleets and HVO, XPO provides clients with tangible ways to meet their own corporate social responsibility targets.
Leveraging technology for carbon compliance
The logistics sector is reshaping itself amidst regulatory complexity and carbon compliance. To address these concerns, XPO is modifying its supply chain and procurement strategies.
The company has embedded AI into daily operations, utilising its ExpressNow service for AI-led scheduling. Additionally, XPO Connect serves as an automated marketplace providing virtual access to transportation services.
This system uses machine learning to determine the ideal carrier for each load based on real-time market conditions. This ensures that efficiency, cost savings or resilience do not need to be sacrificed to meet green targets.
"Data-rich planning, AI-led decision-making and digitally connected networks will redefine how goods move," explains Simon Evans, Finance Director for the UK and Ireland, at XPO.
"Logistics becomes less about chasing growth and more about making every move count through smarter loads, more intelligent nodes and smarter decisions."
Advancing decarbonisation across supply chains
Paul Murray, Business Unit Director at XPO Logistics, oversees operations within the fuel, general chemicals, retail and construction sectors. Paul has helped shape the sustainability strategy across the UK and Ireland.
His work focuses on decarbonisation and building long-term environmental resilience. The company seeks to lead the advancement of operational efficiency alongside its net-zero goals.
Paul says: "XPO Logistics has been actively advancing sustainability initiatives across its operations, from major partnerships to net-zero pledges. Speaking at the Summit gives XPO a platform to highlight real, measurable progress.
"We share practical insights on how logistics providers can drive decarbonisation inside complex supply chains."
Through these transformations, XPO shows how to maintain an expert position in sustainable and efficient logistics.
