How Maersk & OCP are Boosting Sustainable Logistics

OCP Group and logistics giant Maersk are elevating their partnership, signing a global Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance sustainable and technology-driven supply chain solutions.
The agreement, led by OCP’s Specialty Products & Solutions (SPS) Strategic Business Unit, strengthens a long-running collaboration between the Moroccan fertiliser leader and the Copenhagen-based shipping and logistics company.
The partnership builds on a strong foundation, with a focus on streamlining global supply chains through cutting-edge technologies and environmentally friendly practices.
Key areas outlined in the MoU include ocean freight and inland transportation, logistics services, digitised supply chain management and collaborative sustainability projects.
These initiatives highlight a commitment to not only enhancing operational efficiency but also minimising environmental impact.
Maersk's extensive global logistics network, spanning more than 130 countries, provides a robust platform for this partnership.
The company is committed to achieving net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2040, which involves transformative measures such as deploying new vessels, adopting innovative technologies and transitioning to low-emission fuels.
This sustainable agenda complements OCP's strategic vision to expand its SPS operations globally, leveraging Morocco’s vast phosphate rock reserves to offer sustainable solutions in sectors like food security, electric mobility and renewable energy.
Logistics education for Morocco’s future
The MoU extends beyond mere operational synergies, incorporating a strong educational focus.
In collaboration with Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), the partners will launch joint academic programs designed to advance research and training in logistics, supply chain management and sustainability.
This initiative aims to equip the next generation of professionals in Morocco — a strategic market for Maersk in the Mediterranean — with the skills necessary to thrive in a sustainable logistics ecosystem.
According to Emilio De La Cruz, South West Europe and Maghreb Area Managing Director at Maersk, the collaboration goes beyond operations.
"We are very pleased to see that our partners at OCP Group share our commitment to innovation and making supply chains more resilient and future-proof," he says. "Through our joint initiatives in the area of research and education, we also aim to increase the competencies in logistics and supply chain among the next generation of professionals in Morocco – one of our key markets in the Mediterranean."
Green ambition matched with global scale
Sustainability is a central pillar of the agreement.
The companies are united in their goals to reduce CO₂ emissions, experiment with sustainable fuels and improve energy efficiency across their operations.
Both OCP and Maersk have pledged to achieve net zero emissions by 2040, emphasising their commitment to sustainable development.
OCP's SPS business unit plays a pivotal role in the company’s strategy to develop customised phosphate-based solutions for global markets, extending its reach beyond traditional fertilisers to include applications in agriculture, clean technology and energy.
The group's green investment plan aligns with this growth, focusing on reducing environmental impacts with a US$13bn investment from 2023 to 2027 aimed at increasing fertiliser output, expanding renewable energy capacity and using only non-conventional water resources.
By 2025, OCP plans to operate entirely on non-conventional water, targeting full reliance on clean energy by 2027.
Its ultimate objective is full carbon neutrality by 2040, with plans to cover Scopes 1 and 2 by 2030 and Scope 3 by 2040.
Collaborating with Maersk brings OCP closer to these targets while ensuring its logistics infrastructure is agile, digital-ready, and aligned with global sustainability standards.
