Job From: Head of Net Zero, easyJet
Job To: Director of Sustainability, easyJet
Aviation is a vital part of modern business but has a significant impact on the planet.
easyJet is a multinational low-cost airline that carries more than 80 million passengers each year.
Based in the UK, the airline flies as far as Egypt and makes nearly 1,500 flights per day across Europe.
In 2022, the company launched its Roadmap to Net Zero aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
By 2050, the easyJet aims to deliver a 78% reduction in emissions through operational efficiencies, airspace modernisation, fleet renewal with NEO, use of sustainable aviation fuels and zero carbon emissions aircraft.
It will remove any residual emissions through carbon removals and was the first airline in 2023 to sign up to Airbus’ carbon removal initiative with 1PointFive.
Lahiru Ranasinghe was the architect of these plans as the easyJet’s Head of Net Zero and is now its Director of Sustainability.
Lahiru joined EasyJet in 2019 after working across the aviation industry at British Airways and Virgin Atlantic.
He joined the company as a Senior Strategy Manager before moving into sustainability in 2022.
Lahiru earned an MEng in Aeronautical Engineering from Imperial College London.
“I have spent the last three years building easyJet’s Net Zero roadmap and establishing the partnerships and internal structures to start delivering on this extremely exciting and challenging journey,” he says.
“Now I have the privilege of stepping up and starting the new year as Director of Sustainability at easyJet, taking over from my mentor and pioneer of sustainability in aviation, Jane Ashton.”
