Amazon is celebrating a significant milestone with one billion packages delivered via electric vehicles, paving the way for a greener future in logistics

Amazon has achieved a significant milestone with the delivery of its billionth package in the US by an electric vehicle (EV).

That's one billion packages delivered sustainably, thanks to Amazon's growing fleet of EVs.

"It couldn't have happened without the incredible delivery associates and over 20,000 electric vans now delivering to customers in thousands of cities from coast to coast," celebrates Kara Hurst, Chief Sustainability Officer at Amazon.

Kara Hurst, CSO at Amazon

"Our one billionth delivery didn't arrive with a big red bow, so the customer probably didn't know the difference. But, that's the point. We want every customer to experience reliable and fast delivery, regardless of the changes we're making behind the scenes.

"Every new EV signals an important shift and we're on our way to hitting our goal of at least 100,000 electric delivery vans on the road by 2030."

The road toward electrification

Amazon's shift towards a more sustainable logistics framework has been in progress for several years.

Amazon has rolled out EVs in phases, introducing innovative partnerships and cutting-edge technologies:
  • 2020: Amazon ordered 1,800 electric Mercedes-Benz vans for its European fleet, with 500 dedicated to the UK.
  • 2022: Custom electric delivery vans, developed in partnership with Rivian, began deployment. Amazon aimed to deploy 10,000 Rivian vans by the end of the year, with an ambitious goal of 100,000 by 2030.
  • 2023: By October, Amazon reported having 10,000 Rivian electric vans actively delivering across the US.

This move is particularly significant in the age where e-commerce is booming, making last-mile delivery—an essential part of logistics—crucial for environmental sustainability.

Sustainability at the last mile

Electric vehicles are increasingly pivotal in last-mile delivery logistics, addressing several critical challenges. This change is driven by the benefits that EVs bring to the table:

1. Cost efficiency

Transitioning to EVs significantly reduces operational costs:

  • EVs can cut down fuel expenses by up to 80% compared to traditional internal combustion engine vehicles.
  • They offer up to 70% lower maintenance costs.
  • In the broader spectrum, the total cost of ownership for electric delivery vehicles is competitively lower, making them an appealing option for logistics entities.

2. Environmental sustainability

EVs play a vital role in minimising the environmental impact of last-mile delivery by:

  • Eliminating tailpipe emissions which positively affects air quality in urban settings.
  • Contributing to up to 90% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than their ICE counterparts.
  • Aligning with severe emissions legislations thereby aiding companies to stay compliant and evade penalties.

3. Operational benefits

For city deliveries, EVs offer noticeable operational advantages:

  • Their rapid acceleration and aptitude for stop-and-go traffic enhances manoeuvrability in congested urban areas.
  • Advanced battery analytics aid in optimising route planning and vehicle utilisation.

4. Meeting demands of consumers and businesses

With a growing consumer focus on sustainability, businesses are inclined to adapt:

  • There is a rising demand among consumers for eco-friendly delivery options.
  • Businesses keen on shrinking their carbon footprint are increasingly partnering with logistics providers that prioritise sustainable practices.

5. Future-proofing logistics operations

The adoption of EVs is anticipated to safeguard logistics businesses against upcoming regulatory changes and industry shifts:

  • Major cities globally are laying down stricter regulations on vehicle emissions to combat urban pollution.
  • Electric fleets are well-positioned to comply with these new norms and build resilience against future changes in regulations.

Sustainable supply chains of the future

Amazon's commitment to the deployment of 100,000 electric vans by 2030 is not just about reaching a milestone; it's a clear indication of its drive towards creating a more sustainable future in logistics and e-commerce.

With a clear roadmap to deploy 100,000 electric vans by 2030, Amazon continues to lead by example in the transition to sustainable transportation.

As Kara puts it, every new EV is a step toward a more sustainable world, proving that innovation and responsibility can go hand in hand in delivering for customers—and the planet.
