DP World's robust US$6.3bn investment in sustainable logistics includes a carbon insetting programme involving the decarbonisation of shipping containers

DP World is a giant of global trade, championing both sustainability and operational efficiency.

With a vast network that spans six continents and employs more than 100,000 people, this powerhouse orchestrates comprehensive supply chain solutions encompassing ports, terminals, marine services, logistics and technology advancements.

In the UK,  DP World has undertaken a massive investment exceeding £5bn (US$6.3bn).

This impressive financial commitment has born an integrated network highlighted by two state-of-the-art deep-sea terminals located at London Gateway and Southampton.

DP World's carbon insetting program has hit a significant milestone

The organisation's commitment to environmental stewardship is illustrated by its Carbon Inset Programme, successfully launched in December 2024.

This initiative, now undergoing a six-month trial phase, encourages importers to actively participate in sustainability by offering them 50kg CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) in carbon credits for each loaded container they move through London Gateway and Southampton.

In the programme's first two months cargo owners registered upwards of 100,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of import-laden containers.

Should half of the import cargo owners onboard during the trial period, the expected outcome will be a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions exceeding 10,000 tons from supply chains.

A greener approach to supply chain management

John Trenchard, the Vice President of Commercial & Supply Chain at DP World in the UK, says: “At DP World we are committed to innovation and offering our customers transparent and pragmatic solutions that help them achieve their sustainability goals.”

He closely ties the Carbon Inset Program with the company's earlier Modal Shift Programme, which in its debut year already slashed carbon emissions of their customers by more than 17,000 tons.

“We have already seen a surge in sign-ups to the Carbon Inset Programme, putting this program on the course to success,” John explains.

DP World envisions a radically reduced emissions landscape, aiming to curtail absolute emissions by 42% come 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

Central to this ambitious aim are programmes like Carbon Inset, which, in addition to advancing the industry's environmental goals, offer companies a means to trim their carbon footprints materially.

Carbon credits and lower-emission fuels

Central to the Carbon Inset program is Unifeeder, a DP World subsidiary, which is responsible for generating carbon credits by using lower-emission fuels throughout its Northern European shipping routes.

These credits, accumulated and independently verified quarterly, enable businesses to demonstrate their dedication to sustainability to consumers and fulfill ever-tightening sustainability objectives.

By crafting a reliable pathway to mitigate Scope 3 emissions – those indirectly incurred through supply chain activities – DP World empowers importers to align with stricter emissions regulations and corporate sustainability requirements while responding to the worldwide push towards cleaner supply chains.

An expanding global supply chain network

DP World continually broadens its supply chain capabilities beyond managing emissions effectively. Operating across 78 countries and handling 10% of global commerce, the company provides logistics, forwarding and European transport services that integrate seamlessly into its extensive global network.

Such comprehensive connectivity enables companies to expedite goods transfer while benefiting from DP World's sustainability drives.

As supply chain complexities multiply, initiatives like the Carbon Inset Program show how logistics providers can help companies tackle environmental challenges while maintaining operational efficiency and reliability.
