Job From: Group Climate & Sustainability Officer at BHP
Job To: Chief Sustainability Officer at Westpac
“I believe the financial sector has a unique opportunity to demonstrate the value of embedding sustainability into business decision-making.”
With more than 25 years of experience in sustainability, environmental management and climate change strategy, Fiona brings a vast amount of expertise to her role in the financial sector, as Westpac’s Chief Sustainability Officer.
Prior to joining Westpac, Fiona spent nearly 15 years at BHP, one of the world's largest mining companies, climbing the ladder until becoming Group Climate and Sustainability Officer. During her tenure at BHP, she was instrumental in developing and implementing the company's climate change strategy, focusing on mitigation, adaptation, portfolio evaluation, stakeholder engagement and low emissions technology.
One of her most notable achievements at BHP includes leading the development of the company’s Climate Change Portfolio Analysis report in 2015, a ground-breaking industry analysis examining the impacts of both orderly and rapid transitions to a low-carbon future on the company's portfolio valuation. This work demonstrated her forward-thinking approach to addressing climate risks in business operations.
Before BHP, Fiona spent 11 years with bp in various environmental leadership roles across the UK and Australia. As Environmental Affairs Manager for bp Australia from 2005 to 2010, she managed BP's strategic agenda on climate change, developed policy positions across bp's business segments, and represented the company in various industry bodies, including the Australian Industry Greenhouse Network and the Business Council of Australia.
At Westpac, Fiona’s focus will be on leading the company's sustainability initiatives across climate, nature, Indigenous engagement and human rights. She says that she is committed to helping organisations understand climate-related risks and advising on effective strategies to manage the transition to a low-carbon future, bringing her science-based approach to the financial sector.
