How SLB's Tech will Remove 100,000 Tonnes of CO₂

SLB, a leader within the energy technology domain, stands as the predominant offshore drilling company globally by revenue.
Previously known as Schlumberger, SLB isn’t just about drilling; it covers everything from reservoir characterisation, production and drilling, to processing for the oil and gas sectors.
Its offerings range across the full spectrum of the industry, facilitating everything from exploration to production and integrated pipeline solutions for hydrocarbon recovery.
SLB’s role in carbon capture
In addition to its vast portfolio, SLB is also deeply ingrained in the carbon capture, utilisation and sequestration (CCUS) sector.
CCUS is a method where CO₂ is captured from emission sources, repurposed for use before being securely stored underground, a critical technique in the struggle against climate change.
“Our approach to carbon capture, utilisation and sequestration combines subsurface and surface solutions for an end-to-end partnership that provides a comprehensive solution for your carbon mitigation needs, managing the entire process from capturing CO₂ at the source to its permanent storage underground; essentially, a one-stop shop for all your CCUS requirements,” SLB says.
Its joint venture with Aker Carbon Capture, SLB Capturi, is where a lot of SLB’s carbon capture focus is channelled through.
Introducing SLB Capturi
SLB Capturi was brought to life in tandem with Aker Carbon Capture in 2024.
This venture is more than just about bringing carbon capture solutions to market; it’s also deeply invested in research and development to pioneer forward-thinking solutions that resonate with global industry needs.
“Our mission at SLB Capturi is to deliver impact at scale with carbon capture as a critical pathway to net zero,” says Egil Fagerland, CEO of SLB Capturi.
“With our proven, cost-effective technologies and modular approach, we’re enabling industries to integrate carbon capture into their existing operations, driving significant carbon reduction and removal.”
Combining the expertise and experience of both SLB and Aker, SLB Capturi brings forth innovative carbon reduction and removal solutions, backed by more than two decades of experience in the field and more than 60,000 operational hours.
The joint venture is spearheading the construction of seven carbon capture plants across diverse industries such as bioenergy, waste-to-energy and cement.
SLB Capturi's Just Catch modular carbon capture plant
SLB Capturi is handing over its modular carbon capture plant at Twence’s waste-to-energy facility.
Twence is a Netherlands-based sustainable energy supplier.
This plant will capture up to 100,000 metric tonnes of CO₂ each year annually at Twence’s site in Hengelo.
“We are extremely proud of our collaboration with Twence to bring online the first modular carbon capture plant at a waste-to-energy facility,” Egil says.
“As pressure mounts for industrials to reduce emissions and meet net zero targets, access to affordable, effective carbon capture technologies is more important than ever.
“We look forward to continuing our mission to enable access to the capture technologies needed to achieve CO₂ emissions reduction impact at scale."
The captured CO₂ will find usage in the horticulture and food and beverage industries.
“We are excited to see the successful completion of our new carbon capture plant,” says Marc Kapteijn, CEO of Twence.
“This highly innovative and sustainable project was safely realised by a motivated and committed team and through intensive collaboration with SLB Capturi.
“In the spring, we will supply the first CO₂ to the greenhouse horticulture sector.
“We are convinced that this technology plays a crucial role in our ongoing efforts to reduce carbon emissions and realise our sustainability ambitions.”
