Formula E Set to Adopt Google Cloud AI to Boost Performance

The integration of generative AI into professional sports marks a transformation in how athletes train, compete and engage with fans.
While language models analyse game footage in football and computer vision systems track player movements in basketball, motorsport presents unique challenges for AI implementation due to the complexity of vehicle dynamics and split-second decision making.
Formula E β the world's first all-electric FIA World Championship racing series β has now expanded its technology partnership with Google Cloud to address these challenges through AI deployment across its operations.
The multi-year agreement coincides with Formula E's GEN3 Evo era of racing cars and represents one of motorsport's most comprehensive implementations of Gen AI technology.βββββββ
How Google Cloud's Vertex AI could help Formula E
This partnership is anchored in the deployment of Google Cloud's Vertex AI platform. This powerful enterprise machine learning system allows organisations to train and deploy AI models at scale.
It processes telemetry data from Formula E cars to generate detailed performance insights and real-time feedback during races.
Additionally, Formula E integrates Google's Gemini large language models, which analyse race data to produce customised coaching tips for drivers.
These systems consider vehicle telemetry, track conditions and historical performance data to refine race strategies, encompassing tire management and energy consumption.
“We're thrilled to announce an enhanced multi-year partnership with Google Cloud that will increase our technological capabilities,” says Jeff Dodds, CEO of Formula E.
He highlights how this partnership "will deliver a step-change for the series in how we're able to continue producing some of the most exciting racing in the world."
Driving sustainably through AI
As the only sport certified net zero carbon from inception, Formula E's commitment to sustainability is further powered by its partnership with Google Cloud. AI models are vital in optimising energy use during races and assist teams in developing more efficient strategies.
Through its network of teams, manufacturers, and partners, Formula E champions the push towards sustainable technology development in motorsport. The championship's city-centric racing events showcase electric vehicles' capabilities in real-world settings, demonstrating a sustainable future in action.
βWith the continued growth of the series and an ever-growing fanbase of nearly 400 million, it is no surprise that our new and longstanding partner portfolio is seeing increasing value in one of the most innovative sports on the planet,β says Jeff.
Transforming fan engagement with AI
Formula E also uses BigQuery, Google Cloud's serverless data warehouse, as part of this comprehensive partnership. Integrated with customer relationship management systems, it facilitates real-time analysis of various data streams including video feeds, vehicle telemetry, and social media engagement metrics.
The use of generative AI reshapes fan interactions with the sport, deploying machine learning to tailor race commentary and provide in-depth statistical insights and forecasts about race outcomes.
The collaboration has further enabled Formula E to move its operational data to Google Cloud's infrastructure and adopt Google Workspace for seamless internal communications. Enhanced by AI tools, these technologies help centralise data operations and improve collaboration across teams.
The security aspect is critical; Google Cloud provides sophisticated threat intelligence systems and incident response capabilities, safeguarding Formula E's cloud-based operations. Google Cloud is designated as Formula E's Official Cloud Security Partner, ensuring robust data protection within the AI-driven motorsport ecosystem.βββββββ
βWith Google Cloud's Gen AI tools and advanced data analytics, including our Vertex AI platform and Gemini models, we're helping Formula E supercharge innovation in motorsport,β explains Tara Brady, President of Google Cloud EMEA.
"Together, we're pushing the boundaries of sustainable racing, redefining what's possible on and off the track."
