How Salesforce Supports Green Non-Profits with Agentic AI

Salesforce has unveiled the latest phase of its Agents for Impact programme, introducing a nature-focused accelerator aimed at transforming how mission-driven organisations deploy AI to tackle environmental challenges.
The initiative, launched in April 2025, builds on Salesforce’s existing work helping non-profits scale their efforts through agentic AI — a form of autonomous artificial intelligence capable of decision-making, learning and acting independently of human oversight.
According to Sunya Norman, Senior Vice President of Impact at Salesforce, the scale of climate-related challenges demands technological innovation that can match the urgency.
“To fully harness nature’s potential to drive global resilience and restoration efforts, we need innovation that matches the scale and urgency of the challenge,” she says.
Agentic AI, she says, offers “limitless digital labour”, making it possible to monitor ecosystems in real time, forecast climate risks and streamline environmental management tasks.
The Agentforce platform and digital labour
Central to the programme is Salesforceās Agentforce platform, which enables non-profits to build and deploy AI tools designed to support operational and mission-related tasks.
While AI has become increasingly prominent in commercial and enterprise sectors, non-profits often lack the resources to adopt it effectively, so this is a big step for the sector.
Salesforce research highlights that 74% of non-profits recognise the value of technology but face significant barriers such as limited staffing and funding. These constraints make the case for AI-driven assistance particularly strong.
āMany mission-driven organisations, like those with the passion to deliver nature-based solutions, lack the capacity and technical resources needed to fully realise their goals,ā explains Sunya.
The new cohort of participants in Salesforceās accelerator programme includes five organisations working across forest stewardship, regenerative agriculture, clean water, fair trade and corporate sustainability.
Each group will integrate AI agents into their operations with the aim of achieving measurable impact at scale.
- Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is creating a forest certification agent with the goal of making FSC certification more accessible, including providing tools for community and family forests, and accelerating the adoption of responsible forest management practices worldwide.
- Rare is rolling out a regenerative agriculture coach to deliver real-time, localized guidance to smallholder farmers tailored to their crops, soils, and local agro-ecological conditions. Anticipated impact includes a 40% reduction in staff time and the adoption of climate-resilient practices across 5,000 farmers in the initial phase.
- Fair Trade USA is building a partner management agent to understand holistic partner health, quickly resolve issues, and proactively engage partners to maintain investment in the Fair Trade Certification program, ultimately aiming to increase meaningful partner outreach and reduce trade partner decertification by 6%.
- Global Water Center is launching a WASH alumni agent to deliver relevant, personalized learning resources to professionals working on safely managed water access, improving the dissemination of best practices in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) ā and potentially increasing the number of learners mentored by 125%.
- Ceres is developing a partner engagement agent to support portfolio companies in implementing 500 sustainable company actions ā with the anticipated impact of speeding the time for companies to make sustainability commitments by 33%.
From certification to clean water
Among the participants is the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), which is developing an AI agent to simplify and expand access to forest certification.
The agent will support smaller community and family forest managers, helping to spread responsible forestry practices.
Rare, an organisation working on regenerative agriculture, is launching an AI-powered coaching tool to support 5,000 smallholder farmers with tailored advice.
The goal is not only to cut staff time by 40% but also to encourage climate-resilient practices suited to specific agro-ecological zones.
Fair Trade USA is focusing on strengthening partner engagement, aiming to reduce trade partner decertification by 6% through a new AI agent that monitors and supports certification stakeholders.
Meanwhile, Global Water Center is building a WASH alumni agent to improve training outcomes in water, sanitation and hygiene by delivering personalised learning resources — potentially increasing mentorship by 125%.
Finally, Ceres is targeting corporate impact by deploying an AI agent that will support companies in implementing sustainable practices.
The tool is expected to accelerate commitment-making timelines by 33%, underscoring the programme’s relevance not just to civil society but also to the private sector.
Expanding the sustainability toolkit
The Agents for Impact initiative is part of a broader sustainability agenda at Salesforce, which includes efforts to address the environmental footprint of AI itself.
The company recently partnered with Hugging Face, Cohere and Carnegie Mellon to launch the AI Energy Score — a benchmarking tool to assess the energy efficiency of AI models.
Salesforce has become the first to disclose the energy use of its proprietary models, signalling a shift toward greater transparency in an industry often criticised for its carbon intensity.
“Transparency like that offered by the AI Energy Score is crucial,” says Ariane Thomas, Global Tech Director of Sustainability at L’Oreal Group.
“By openly sharing energy consumption data, our companies can collectively implement eco-design practices and minimise the environmental footprint of AI technologies.”
