The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is undoubtedly one of the most important and influential organisations in the sustainability field.

More than 10,000 companies are engaged with the SBTi – more than 7,000 have validated science-based targets and 3,000 have committed to set them.

Companies with validated targets or commitments include Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet (Google), Meta and Tesla.

The SBTi is changing its Target Dashboard in 2025 to enhance its clarity, usability and performance alongside improving how it tracks and displays data.

These changes include introducing unique identifiers to help identification of distinct businesses in its data.

Taylor Frerichs, SBTi Services Senior Data Governance Manager, explains: “In response to feedback from many regular users, the SBTi has been working to roll out improvements to the Dashboard to enhance the clarity and usability of its data.

“On March 11th, an updated version will be launched.”

What changes is SBTi implementing?

A new version of the dashboard has been available in beta form alongside the original Companies Taking Action page, but the old version will be sunsetted in line with the new release on 11 March 2025.

The SBTi describes its new dashboard as being a “single source of truth” for target and commitment data.

It will remain possible to download data by company as is a feature on the legacy dashboard, and downloads by target will also be available.

Where possible, field names will be aligned between these two types of download, resulting in some updates to the field names in either or both downloads.

SBTi IDs will be introduced to help identify distinct businesses in the data and entry IDs will identify each business’ individual targets and commitments when data is downloaded by target.

The future for the SBTi

The SBTi is going through a number of big changes after controversy over carbon offsets in April 2024

Ex-CEO Luiz Amaral stepped down in July 2024 and said: “My time as CEO has been incredibly rewarding and I remain steadfast in my belief in the importance, the impact and the promising future of the SBTi.”

Since Luiz’s departure, Susan Jenny Ehr has been serving as the SBTi’s Interim CEO.

Susan previously held the position of Chief Legal Officer and has led SBTi with dedicated support from the Board.

In January 2025, the SBTi announced the appointment of David Kennedy as its new CEO, expected to start the role in Q2.

Susan says: “David's appointment is excellent news for the SBTi and for corporate climate action as a whole. He has extensive experience delivering impact on a global scale and I look forward to welcoming him to the SBTi and working with him to ensure a smooth transition as he takes on his role as CEO.”

The organisation is also reviewing its Corporate Net Zero Standard, the world’s only framework for corporate net zero target setting that is in line with climate science.
