Meet Melanie Nakagawa, Microsoft's Forward-Thinking CSO

As one of the world’s largest companies, Microsoft shoulders a huge responsibility when it comes to global sustainability.
Melanie Nakagawa has headed up the tech giant’s sustainable operations since 2023 and has made a huge impact since her arrival.
She is reshaping how technology companies approach environmental responsibility and climate action, advocating a tech-driven approach to climate action.
Before Microsoft: Melanie’s professional background
Throughout her career, Melanie has acquired a huge wealth of experience and skills, developed in positions across government, policy and corporate sustainability.
Before joining Microsoft in 2023, she held the position of Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Climate and Energy on the National Security Council in the Biden administration.
She has also served as Head of Climate Initiative at Princeville Capital, where she focused on investing in innovative climate technologies.
During the Obama administration, Melanie worked as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Transformation in the US State Department, developing expertise in global energy and environmental policy.
Microsoft's sustainability commitments
Under Melanie’s leadership, Microsoft has pursued one of the world’s most ambitious corporate climate agendas.
The company aims to become carbon-negative by 2030 and to remove all historical carbon emissions since its founding by 2050.
Melanie oversees Microsoft's Climate Innovation Fund, which commits US$1bn to accelerate the development of carbon reduction technologies.
She also oversees the company’s water positive initiatives, which includes dozens of water replenishment and water access projects around the world.
Her data-driven approach leverages Microsoft's technological capabilities to measure, report and optimise environmental performance across operations and supply chains.
She is also a vocal proponent of closing the gender gap in the sustainability sphere.
"For me, sustainability is truly a team sport,” she says.
The role of technology in climate action
In February 2025, she acknowledged that the company’s investments in AI were making the achievement of its climate goals more difficult in the short term.
However, she expressed her belief that AI will be the tool that helps humanity mitigate the effects of climate change in the long term.
"The force creating this distance from our goals in the short term is the same one that will help us build a bigger, faster and more powerful rocket to reach them in the long term: artificial intelligence," she explained.
Melanie’s vision centres on harnessing technology as a powerful tool for environmental good.
She champions Microsoft's AI-driven climate tools, carbon capture investments and nature-based solutions.
"AI is one of the most powerful tools we have at our disposal to develop and scale innovative solutions that can move the needle on addressing climate change and related Sustainable Development Goals," she says.
Under her guidance, Microsoft continues to advance initiatives like the Planetary Computer, which applies AI and cloud computing to environmental data to help monitor ecosystem health and inform conservation efforts globally.
Melanie’s influence on global sustainability
Melanie’s influence extends well beyond Microsoft's corporate boundaries.
She is a recognised and well respected voice in climate leadership, frequently speaking at major sustainability summits including COP conferences and the World Economic Forum.
Her collaborative approach has strengthened partnerships with organisations focused on decarbonising industries and enhancing global climate resilience.
She is a huge advocate for strategic partnerships, emphasising that addressing climate change requires cooperation between governments, businesses, civil society and communities.
This cross-sector collaboration reflects her belief that technological solutions must be deployed alongside policy innovation and community engagement to drive meaningful environmental impact.
AI is one of the most powerful tools we have at our disposal to develop and scale innovative solutions that can move the needle on addressing climate change and related Sustainable Development Goals.
Melanie’s vision for the future
Naturally, as a leader at one of the world’s largest tech companies, Melanie sees a future where digital technology plays a pivotal role in solving the world's climate challenges.
She champions Microsoft's commitment to AI-powered sustainability solutions, aiming to drive advancements in carbon reduction, water conservation and circular economy models.
Importantly, Melanie remains a transparent and communicative sustainability leader – an invaluable trait in the pursuit of a fair and equitable green transition.
“Our ambitious 2030 targets to become carbon negative, water positive, zero waste and to protect biodiversity require continued innovation across every aspect of our operations, and we’re committed to sharing what we learn along the way,” she says.
