The travel and tourism industry accounts for 10% of global GDP but is responsible for 8% of global carbon emissions according to the World Economic Forum.
Trip.com Group owns and operates travel sites including namesake Trip.com, Skyscanner, CTrip and MakeMyTrip.
It supports more than 1.7 million hotels, 600 airlines and 560,000 attractions around the world.
The company has committed to achieving net zero by 2050 and submitting its emission reduction plans to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for approval.
Jane McFadzean is Trip.com Group’s Senior Director of Global Sustainability and ESG and is leading the company’s efforts to reduce its negative impact on the planet.
Meet Jane McFadzean, Trip.com Group’s sustainability leader
Jane joined Trip.com Group in 2024 as Senior Director of Destination Marketing before taking on the role of Senior Director of Global Sustainability and ESG.
Her career has taken her across industries with giant companies including Microsoft, Orange, ESPN Disney, CBS and Expedia.
She earned a Master of Arts degree from the University of Glasgow in English, Film and TV.
Jane brings her expertise in a wide range of industries and business functions to the sustainability strategy at Trip.com Group.
About Trip.com Group’s social efforts
Trip.com Group’s fifth ESG report covering 2023 shows that the company received an MSCI ESG rating of A and a Silver EcoVadis rating.
The company created more than 100,000 direct jobs and 10 million indirect jobs and aims to use travel to have a positive social impact on the world.
Its hybrid work system has supported 70% of its 36,000 employees to save a total of around 900,000 hours commuting.
A policy in its customer support team also allows team members to return to their hometown and work remotely for up to 48 days before the Spring Festival holiday, benefitting 6,000 employees.
Women account for 57.5% of its total workforce, with 43.5% at mid-management level and 32.3% at senior management level.
Trip.com Group also has a childcare subsidy policy that makes 550 children of its employees eligible for a subsidy worth more than US$6,880 per child.
It plans to invest more than US$137m in childcare subsidies to encourage a better work-life balance, expected to benefit 20,000 employees.
What Trip.com Group is doing for the environment
Trip.com Group provided more than 70 million people access to its lower-carbon travel products in 2023.
It offers hotels taking lower-carbon actions, flights with lower emissions and electric car options for both leisure and business trips.
Carbon data covered 2,600 hotels, 92% of flights and 56% of rental car services for leisure travel products alongside 98% of transportation services for business travel products.
Across 140 enterprises, 2,600 hotels have joined its Low-Carbon Hotel Initiative and have taken lower carbon actions while receiving 4.3 million guests.
The Anhui Jinzhai Branch of Trip.com Group Country Retreat’s green energy system has generated 65,000kWh of electricity since its installation and is expected to save 100,000kWh per year.
Trip.com Group’s headquarters were retrofitted with solar panels that produced more than 70,000kWh of electricity in 2023 and also achieved LEED Gold certification.
