NASCAR: Can Sustainability help Team Penske Win Races?

With a legacy of more than 640 major race wins, nearly 700 pole positions and 47 national championships, Team Penske has long been synonymous with performance.
Off the racetrack, the motorsports leader is racing towards a different kind of finish line – one defined by sustainability and environmental responsibility.
Team Penske has announced that it will deploy Capgemini’s Sustainability Data Hub (SDH), a cloud-based platform that promises to transform the way the team collects, analyses and acts on environmental data.
Data-driven sustainability
This initiative is the latest evolution in a 25 year partnership with Capgemini that has already delivered impact across supply chains, telematics, onboarding and beyond.
The solution enables real-time environmental data capture in a secure, integrated environment.
The dashboard design ensures that team members across the organisation can make informed decisions, not only to drive sustainability outcomes, but also identify cost savings and new business opportunities.
SDH automates the traditionally manual and error-prone process of environmental reporting, ensuring regulatory compliance and creating a single source of truth.
Capgemini is responsible for:
- Developing the solution architecture
- Performing the data engineering
- Deploying and testing the platform
- Offering strategic support – including a roadmap for decarbonisation.
“With Capgemini’s SDH, Team Penske will bring greater automation and transparency to its sustainability reporting across operations,” reports Team Penske.
“The platform enables on-demand data collection, reporting and robust compliance monitoring, giving Team Penske the tools to make informed, data-driven decisions as it advances its sustainability strategy.”
“At Team Penske, we strive for best-in-class performance both on and off the track,” comments Bill Combs, Vice President of Sustainability at Penske.
“The data hub we’ve built with Capgemini will supercharge our existing sustainability programs by enabling us to make data-driven decisions as we continue to find ways to reduce our environmental impact across multiple motorsport series.”
A legacy of green innovation
Team Penske is the racing division of Penske Corporation, a transportation giant with more than 3,300 global locations and a workforce exceeding 73,000.
Its commitment to sustainability spans across vehicle decarbonisation, facility upgrades, supply chain optimisation and reducing reliance on non-renewable energy sources.
In 2023, Team Penske became the first major motorsports team to power all tractors and support equipment for headline races, including NASCAR, INDYCAR and the SportsCar series, with renewable diesel (R99).
From emissions reporting and auditability to strategic sustainability planning, SDH offers a scalable solution tailored to Team Penske’s complex operations.
The real-time visibility across carbon, water and waste metrics will allow the team to continuously measure its progress and adjust initiatives accordingly.
“These are the kinds of efforts that have enabled NASCAR’s Next Gen car to be created entirely of composite material,” comments Ben Atkins, Operations Director at Team Penske.
“Sustainability is important for all of us, not just for a race team but for all of us.
“It’s important to pay attention to the environment and how we impact it.”
Industry transformation
Capgemini’s involvement goes well beyond software deployment.
The team will oversee the hub’s implementation, training and testing, ensuring precision in the platform’s emissions and impact reporting.
“We have been proud to work with Penske on its digital transformation journey over the last 25 years, and this new sustainability initiative is an exciting next step,” says Anirban Bose, CEO of the Americas Strategic Business Unit and Group Executive Board Member at Capgemini.
“When defining sustainability initiatives in different industries, it’s important to understand how they can enable operational and utility efficiencies across specific areas of the organisation.
“This new technology highlights Team Penske’s leadership in driving sustainable outcomes for even greater success.”
As the partnership evolves, Team Penske will continue to drive positive environmental change, supported by digital tools that connect data to outcomes.
