Northrop Grumman: ESG in Aerospace and Defence

Northrop Grumman’s 2024 Sustainability Report shows the company’s commitment to ESG.
It aims to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions in its operations by 2035, with an interim target of 50% reduction by 2030.

“The foundation of ethics across our company defines how we work and our values are our North Star. We do what we promise, and we always do the right thing.”
Emissions reductions
In 2024, the company reported a 13% reduction in emissions compared to its 2019 base year alongside sourcing 12% of its electricity from renewable sources.
It has also set targets for water management and waste reduction.
By 2030, Northrop Grumman aims to reduce absolute water withdrawals by 10%, reuse 10% of water withdrawals and replenish 10% of water withdrawals, focusing on water-stressed regions.
Additionally, the company plans to reduce solid waste sent to landfill and incineration by 10% by 2030.
Social responsibility
Northrop Grumman's focuses on employee well-being and community engagement.
The company's talent strategy emphasises broadening talent pools, enhancing the employee experience and enabling career growth.
In 2024, 86% of employees reported that their experience at Northrop Grumman met or exceeded their expectations.
An impressive 82% of employees indicated they feel a sense of belonging and inclusion at Northrop Grumman.
The company also prioritises employee health and safety, with incident rates below the aerospace industry average.
“Our commitment to safety and environmental protection remains central to our business,” says Mike Witt, Vice President of Corporate Environment, Health and Safety and Chief Sustainability Officer at Northrop Grumman, in the report.
Corporate citizenship
Northrop Grumman's commitment to corporate citizenship is exemplified through its community engagement initiatives.
In 2024, employees logged nearly 140,000 volunteer hours, valued at US$4.6m.
More than 2,000 employees donated more than US$1.7m through the company's ECHO Workplace Giving Program.
The company's Technology for Conservation (T4C) initiatives expanded in 2024, with a 14% growth in participants representing 75 Northrop Grumman sites.
New T4C projects were also launched, including Virtual Reality SAFE and the Project Reclaim Recycling Process.
Sustainable supply chains
The company maintains high standards of ethics, integrity, and transparency, with over 99% of full- and part-time employees completing ethics training in 2024.
In supply chain management, Northrop Grumman exceeded the US government's 23% small business statutory goal for the 20th consecutive year, with 35% of its total domestic spend going to small business suppliers.
