How Rivian's Electric Vans can Support Sustainability

Rivian Automotive is set to open up its Rivian Commercial Van to US fleet operators of any size, marking a step in the company's expansion within the commercial electric vehicle (EV) market.
The Rivian Commercial Van forms the basis of Amazon's custom electric delivery van (EDV) and has been crafted from the start with a sharp focus on sustainability, safety, total cost of ownership and driver comfort.
Enhanced safety and operational efficiency
Engineered to be among the safest on the road, the Rivian Commercial Van integrates advanced safety technologies like automatic emergency braking, collision warnings and 360-degree visibility.
These systems work together to boost driver awareness and mitigate the risk of accidents, allowing fleet operators to focus on safety without losing out on efficiency.
In terms of driver experience, the van features ergonomic seating, an easy-to-navigate dashboard and straightforward access to the cargo area.
These elements, combined with Rivian’s proprietary software, make operations and fleet management seamless, ultimately enhancing productivity and diminishing operational costs.
The power of collaboration: Rivian and Amazon
Amazon has been instrumental in the development of the Rivian Commercial Van.
During an earlier exclusive agreement, Amazon and Rivian collaborated to design a bespoke version of the van to meet specific delivery requirements.
This partnership has already led to the creation of thousands of electric delivery vans, now a common sight in the US.
During Amazon's move to introduce Rivian EV's to its fleet operations across Europe in 2023, Neil Emery Director of Global Fleet and Product for Amazon had this to say: “Together, Amazon and Rivian designed and built a state-of-the-art electric vehicle from the ground up, and unlike anything else on the road today."
Following the end of the exclusivity period with Amazon, Rivian started to focus more broadly on commercial activities, conducting trials with various large fleet operators.
“Through existing partnerships our commercial vans have already proved incredibly successful," says Tom Solomon, Senior Director for Business Development at Rivian.
"Amazon currently has more than 20,000 in its fleet and delivered over a billion packages from its Electric Delivery Vans in 2024 alone.
"Over the last year we have been focusing our efforts on testing with some larger fleets and we’re really pleased with how those trials have gone.
"As a result, we’re excited to now be able to open sales to fleets of all sizes in the US, whether they want one van or thousands.
"Our vehicles are designed to not only be among the safest on the road, but will also help fleet owners to reduce the cost of fleet ownership and their carbon footprint.”
Versatile solutions for US fleet operators
The Rivian Commercial Van comes in two models, the 500 and the 700, offering versatile solutions for different delivery and transport needs.
The vans boast a payload capacity of up to 2,663 lbs and a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of up to 9,500 lbs.
A significant advantage of Rivian’s commercial offerings is its comprehensive in-house software, managing virtually every aspect of the vehicle’s operations.
The software not only enhances user experience but also curtails maintenance costs and boosts safety.
These advancements enable fleet managers to monitor vehicle performance, optimise routes and ensure efficient energy utilisation.
With these vehicles now available to a broader market, Rivian is solidifying its position as a key player in the commercial EV sector, potentially leading the charge towards the electrification of commercial transport in the upcoming years.
