Sainsbury's partners with Royal Mail to install parcel lockers nationwide
UK supermarket Sainsbury's has partnered with Royal Mail to fit parcel lockers in its stores, boosting customer convenience & reducing transport emissions

UK supermarket chain Sainsbury's has joined forces with Royal Mail, the UK's nationwide postal service, to introduce parcel lockers in supermarket car parks across the UK.

This initiative is intended to provide shoppers with sustainable, convenient options to send and collect parcels as they shop, meaning that customers will no longer have to make separate journeys when running each errand.

So far, this project has only been rolled out at selected stores, but the hope is that it will eliminate unnecessary vehicle emissions.

Parcel lockers have already been deployed at locations in Clapham, Desborough, Kempshott, Low Hall, Kidderminster and Chislehurst. The nationwide expansion aims to enhance accessibility and convenience for eco-conscious shoppers.

Royal Mail's locker service, which was launched in December 2025, is a reaction to the rise in popularity of second-hand marketplace transactions and the increasing demand from online shopping.

It supports sustainable practices by minimising the environmental footprint associated with delivery logistics.

"Partnering with a retailer with the scale and popularity of Sainsbury’s is great news for our customers and the UK public, who will now have even more ways to drop off and collect their parcels in convenient locations," says Jack Clarkson, Group Strategy and Transformation Director at Royal Mail.

Integrating parcel services into eco-friendly shopping

Unlike traditional post boxes, Royal Mail lockers at Sainsbury’s are standalone units in supermarket car parks, accessible seven days a week.

They serve both as drop-off and collection points, streamlining the parcel management process.

Customers begin the process online, paying for postage and using a QR code at the locker to print labels or use return codes.

This eliminates the need for a home printer, reducing paper waste.

The service appeals to those managing parcels on-the-go, offering cost-effective solutions starting at US$1.55 for small parcels.

As second-hand sales grow, these lockers are increasingly used to send items purchased through platforms like Vinted and eBay, fostering a circular economy.

“The lockers offer a convenient, sustainable way to handle parcels while shopping,” says Patrick Dunne, Chief Property and Procurement Officer at Sainsbury’s.

This effort aligns with Sainsbury’s broader sustainability goals by decreasing individual transport emissions and improving resource efficiency.

Expanding sustainable logistics infrastructure

This initiative is part of Royal Mail's broader strategy to enhance its presence in public spaces. Customers now have access to more than 1,500 parcel lockers and 7,000 Collect+ points, in addition to Royal Mail’s extensive network of Post Office branches and Customer Service Points.

Encouraging parcel drop-offs at local hubs allows Royal Mail to consolidate collections, reducing van journeys and supporting a greener logistics framework. This approach highlights a shift towards more sustainable delivery solutions.

Innovating street-level parcel solutions

In addition to supermarket lockers, Royal Mail is revamping street-level services by adapting post boxes to accept small barcoded parcels, with solar-powered models being trialled in select areas.

These innovations cater to changing parcel habits while minimising the environmental impact of postal services.

The updated post boxes feature larger openings for parcels and the process is simplified with barcode scanning, eliminating the need for physical receipts.

Emma Gilthorpe, CEO at Royal Mail, explains: “We are giving our iconic post boxes a new lease of life on street corners across the nation.

"You can now drop your parcel in any post box where it fits – you just need a label with a barcode.”

This system supports frequent sellers and promotes ease of use while aligning with sustainability objectives.

Royal Mail’s app enhances this system with location tracking, offering proof of posting without paper.

The goal is to make the postal network the most accessible and sustainable in the country, with over 115,000 post boxes already in place.

Both the new lockers and post boxes underscore Royal Mail’s commitment to meeting consumer needs sustainably, offering easy access while reducing the carbon footprint associated with traditional delivery methods.
