Brembo is increasing sustainability by sourcing solar-powered aluminium from Emirates Global Aluminium, reducing emissions from materials

Aluminium is a vital raw material for Brembo's callipers, which are part of its leading braking system.

With this resource being a core component of the business, making up its most prominent technology, together with the disc of the company's high-performance braking systems.

Producing aluminium is energy-intensive, but Brembo is dedicated to reducing the environmental impact of its operations.

This commitment involves harnessing renewable energy, which helps to significantly lower the emissions associated with aluminium smelting.

To enhance the sustainability of its sourcing, Brembo has signed an agreement with Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), the world's largest "premium aluminium" producer, to source its CelestiAL solar aluminium, produced using solar power.

Beatrice Sarti, Brembo's Chief Purchasing Officer, says: "This allows us to reduce emissions by nearly 50% for the same volume of aluminium, further reinforcing our ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility."

This expanded partnership with EGA exemplifies Brembo's ongoing efforts to integrate sustainable practices across its operations.

Sustainability framework

The company has detailed its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint while continuing to deliver high-quality products to its customers in its Voluntary Report.

Brembo has consistently focused on enhancing its environmental, social and governance performance.

It has progressively refined its materiality assessment approach, evolving it into a comprehensive double materiality analysis that aligns with European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS).

This framework enables the organisation to identify how its operations influence global sustainability objectives.

Through active participation in United Nations Global Compact sessions, Brembo has systematically identified which sustainability goals are most significantly impacted by its business activities.

Supply chain sustainability

Brembo extends its sustainability commitment throughout its supply chain by promoting responsible procurement practices among its supplier network.

The company requires suppliers to implement environmental policies based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology to minimise CO₂ emissions throughout the entire product lifecycle.

Suppliers must establish and maintain ISO 14001-certified environmental management systems and optimise natural resource utilisation, especially water consumption.

They are also required to reduce fossil fuel dependency and implement effective waste management protocols.

Brembo demands comprehensive transparency regarding environmental emissions and expects suppliers to implement concrete, measurable reduction strategies.

The company's Sustainable Procurement Policy is shared with key global suppliers, who become active participants in this sustainability journey.

Brembo's Purchasing Global Commodity Function (GCF) continuously updates this policy framework to ensure procurement activities meet the highest sustainability standards.

The procurement standards framework incorporates ISO 14001 certification requirements for environmental management systems and adheres to OECD guidelines for supply chain due diligence processes.
