Can Intertek Accelerate South Africa’s Recycled Plastic Use?

Intertek, a Total Quality Assurance provider to industries worldwide, has been officially recognised by the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) for the verification of post-consumer recycled content in plastic carrier and flat bags.
This recognition enables Intertek to provide verification services that help South African businesses meet the Compulsory Specification for Plastic Carrier Bags and Flat Bags (VC8087:2013) and the SANS 14021 standards.
By validating recycled content claims, Intertek could play a key role in supporting the transition towards a circular economy and reducing the environmental impact of plastic packaging.
Strengthening environmental regulations
According to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), 400 million tons of plastic waste are produced every year.
South Africa has implemented proactive measures to reduce plastic waste.
Regulations now require plastic carriers and flat bags to contain recycled material, carry accurate environmental labelling and secure NRCS certification before entering the market.
Recycled plastic is a more sustainable alternative compared to virgin plastics, backed by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, however quality and availability can vary.
This regulatory framework not only addresses waste but also encourages the reuse of plastic resources, lowering demand for virgin plastics and aligning with global sustainability goals.
Intertek’s sustainability role
As a conformity assessment body (CAB) recognised by the NRCS, Intertek offers businesses end-to-end support to navigate both regulatory and sustainability requirements.
Leveraging technical expertise in testing, inspection, certification and regulatory assurance, Intertek provides:
- Tailored support aligned with NRCS regulations
- Regulatory, sustainability and testing services
- Transparency and visibility into supplier networks
- A risk-based, cost-effective approach to initial screening.
Industry confidence and commitment to sustainability

“This appointment also reinforces our position as a leading provider of conformity assessment services in Africa and worldwide.”
