Cytiva: Certified Biobased Resins for Sustainable Research

Life sciences business Cytiva has achieved an ISCC PLUS certification for biobased resins.
These resins will be used in its Whatman Puradisc and GD/X filtration devices, used for sample clarification and preparation.
The company says this will reduce its reliance on fossil-based plastics.
Tim Bervoets, President of Discovery & Medical at Cytiva, says: “Our customers are increasingly looking for ways to demonstrate sustainability in their supply chains.
“This certification helps them do that while maintaining the product performance they rely on.”
Thibault Renaud, Senior Manager, Sustainability Strategy and Transformation at Cytiva is set to speak on Carbon Management Strategies at Sustainability LIVE: The Net Zero Summit in 2026.

Certification for biobased resins
ISCC PLUS is a voluntary certification scheme designed to validate sustainability characteristics of alternative feedstocks.
For certified biomaterials, ISCC PLUS lays out requirements for farms, plantations and forestry to ensure sustainable sourcing.
Forest degradation and deforestation, for example, are not allowed under its certification.
Cytiva says that its products made with biobased resins will maintain the same quality and regulatory standards.
Sustainability and Scope 3 in laboratories
A Correspondence article published in Nature in 2015 estimated that laboratory research produces an estimated 5.5 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, or around 2% of global plastic waste.
Cytiva says that laboratories and institutions that use its products are looking to meet sustainability goals, including Scope 3 emissions reduction targets.
This can place a greater focus on sustainable procurement.
The company says it plans to expand the use of certified biobased resins across additional filtration products in the future.
