What are nature-based solutions?

Nature-based solutions are actions that can protect, manage and restore natural and modified ecosystems to benefit people and nature.

They are part of the global progress towards reaching net zero by 2050, working alongside other decarbonisation strategies.

According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), nature-based solutions projects could mitigate up to 10 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide per year, equivalent to 27% of current global annual emissions.

Examples of nature-based solutions include coastal protection, water management, land restoration and urban greening.

Shell's nature-based solutions

Shell has set a target to become a net zero emissions energy business by 2050, in line with the 1.5 C limit set out in the Paris Agreement.

It is investing in nature-based solutions to protect and enhance natural ecosystems, as well as using carbon credits to help customers decarbonise.

Through its projects, Shell is aiming to capture carbon dioxide emissions,  benefit local communities and improve biodiversity.

Wael Sawan, CEO of Shell, says: “We are investing in protecting and restoring natural ecosystems, including forests, which absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through the natural process of photosynthesis.

“These efforts both help restore the natural world and its rich biodiversity and offer a medium-term solution for balancing emissions that cannot be immediately abated. Nature-based projects generate carbon credits, which allow us to meet our customers’ immediate and growing demand for carbon-neutral fuels and products.

“I believe that investing in restoring and protecting forests, grasslands and wetlands – in addition to the other steps we are taking to avoid and reduce emissions – will help us achieve net zero emissions by 2050 in step with society, and have a lasting positive impact on the way land is used, today and in the future.”
