Google & NextEra Energy have partnered to revive the Duane Arnold Energy Centre, providing 615 MW of nuclear power for AI infrastructure & grid reliability

Google and NextEra Energy have announced plans to restart Iowa's only nuclear facility, the Duane Arnold Energy Centre.

The 615-megawatt plant near Cedar Rapids, which shut down in 2020, is expected to return to operation by the first quarter of 2029 under a 25-year power purchase agreement.

The restart addresses a pressing challenge facing the technology sector: AI and cloud computing require constant, carbon-free power that renewable sources like wind and solar cannot provide around the clock.

"AI is forcing an honest conversation about clean energy," explains Robert Little, gTech Sustainability Strategy Lead at Google. "AI and cloud infrastructure need massive, reliable, clean power. Not just when the sun shines or the wind blows, but 24/7."

Financial structure and grid impact

Under the agreement, Google will purchase the majority of Duane Arnold's output whilst Central Iowa Power Cooperative (CIPCO) will buy the remaining portion on identical terms.

NextEra Energy is acquiring CIPCO and Corn Belt Power Cooperative's combined 30% stake in the facility, bringing its ownership to 100%.

The power purchase agreement enables the investment required to restart operations and covers production costs, with Google bearing the financial responsibility for its portion.

Crucially, NextEra Energy has stated that Iowa electricity customers will not bear any costs associated with Google's power purchases from the facility.

"What if there was a fast path to unlock more carbon-free energy using infrastructure that's already built?" says Kate Brandt, Chief Sustainability Officer at Google. "This is a powerful example of a circular economy in action."

Economic projections for Iowa

An economic study projects the restart will generate more than US$9 billion in economic benefits to Iowa.

During construction, the project is expected to create more than 1,600 direct, indirect and induced jobs across the state.

Once operational, approximately 400 direct full-time positions will be established, primarily in Linn County where the facility is located.

The plant is projected to generate more than US$340m in annual economic output during operations state-wide.

Local tax revenue is expected to average US$3m annually to support schools, infrastructure and emergency services.

Google's broader nuclear energy strategy

The collaboration extends beyond Duane Arnold's restart. Google and NextEra have signed a separate agreement to explore deploying new nuclear generation facilities across the US.

"Nuclear is a big piece of the solution as we work toward powering Google's operations with clean energy every hour of every day," says Michael Terrell, Head of Advanced Energy at Google.

"We're aiming to both lower the costs of future advanced nuclear technologies like Kairos Power's small modular reactors and tap into existing nuclear infrastructure that can unleash huge amounts of clean power to meet growing energy needs even sooner, he adds.

The announcement represents NextEra Energy's third gigawatt of energy projects with Google nationwide.

Michael noted the strategy balances long-term innovation with immediate capacity needs by pursuing both existing infrastructure and next-generation reactor designs.

Regulatory pathway and timeline

NextEra Energy is coordinating with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and other governmental authorities to ensure compliance with safety standards.

The company conducted engineering evaluations and community engagement before announcing the restart plans.

"Google and NextEra Energy are answering the call of America's golden age of power demand, creating thousands of jobs, strengthening Iowa’s economy, delivering long-term value to our shareholders and helping power America’s future through innovation and technology," says John Ketchum, Chairman and CEO of NextEra Energy.

The first quarter of 2029 target date makes Duane Arnold one of the first major nuclear restart projects aimed at serving data centre loads.

Robert notes that, when operational, the plant previously supplied approximately 20% of Iowa's electricity, underscoring its significance to regional grid reliability.

The project highlights a pragmatic shift in the sustainability sector's approach to baseload power, with existing nuclear infrastructure increasingly viewed as a bridge solution while advanced reactor technologies mature.
