A career of sustainable innovation

Jim’s career began with spending more than 24 years as a Senior Partner and Managing Director at BCG.

In this role, he worked with Fortune 250 companies across a range of industries, assisting with corporate strategy, portfolio composition, shareholder value creation and growth.

He became Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer at Philips in 2011, where he was responsible for all elements of the company’s strategy.

He led the multi-year transformation of Philips’s performance and capability development.

Jim joined PepsiCo in 2016, working as Senior VP, Corporate Strategy and Chief Venturing Officer.

He took on his current role as CSO in September 2020, where he has been integrating sustainability throughout the business for more than five years.

His aim is to build upon PepsiCo’s capabilities and partnerships by designing roadmaps to build a stronger, more resilient future.

Jim writes on LinkedIn: “Putting farmers first is foundational to transforming the global food system in the face of changing and extreme climate conditions that are impacting the world’s ability to feed itself.

“For PepsiCo, this is crucial. Our business relies on a strong agricultural system and supply of crops and ingredients so we can make and deliver our iconic products.

“It’s why we focus on scaling regenerative agriculture practices across millions of acres around the world, aiming to improve soil health and the livelihoods of farmers so that they can keep farming and feeding the world and we can strengthen the long-term resilience of our business.”

Leading the pep+ strategy

As CSO at PepsiCo, Jim’s work focuses on implementing the company’s pep+ growth and transformation strategy.

This strategic vision guides PepsiCo’s efforts to work with its suppliers and customers, evolve its portfolio and develop the capabilities to support its communities around the world.

In May 2025, the company announced its refined pep+ goals, which focus its sustainability ambitions deeper into agriculture, climate, water and packaging.

Ramon Laguarta, Chairman and CEO of PepsiCo, says: “When we rolled our pep+, our vision to deliver a more sustainable, people-centric future, driving growth and value, in 2021, we knew it would be important for the long-term growth of our company.

“Four years later, pep+ is embedded in practically everything we do. It’s more than a sustainability strategy.

“It’s a strategic, end-to-end transformation that places sustainability at the centre of our business and powers our whole enterprise – from innovation to production, marketing to distribution – while building resilience into our operations and supply chains.”

Jim’s impact at PepsiCo

Jim recently led the introduction of PepsiCo’s “Farmers First” initiative, at the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos.

This involved hosting a Farmers Breakfast at the event, which brought together farmers to discuss the food system transformation.

The aim was to have growers sit with decision makers, allowing leaders to understand the on-the-ground realities that farming communities face.

The event resulted in conversations about what is needed to increase resilience in the farming sector, including fair economics for regenerative practices, better alignment of risk and reward and partnerships that connect data, finance and policy.

Top 250 Sustainability Leaders 2026

Jim told Sustainability Magazine: “The global food system and the future of agriculture is increasingly fragile and at risk, and it requires collective action to transform it in the face of increasing climate pressures, soil degradation, water scarcity and extreme weather events.

“Transforming and strengthening the global food system is essential for long-term business resilience in the food and beverage sector.

“Farmers and farming communities are proving how regenerative agriculture practices can positively impact soil health, emissions, biodiversity, watersheds and crops, strengthening the resilience of their farms, their communities and their ability to continue to grow the crops and food the world depends on.”
