How Will Trumpâs âWokeâ Attack Impact JLRâs Electrification?

So far in 2025, JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) has announced several key updates this year, focusing on EV production, job market adjustments and autonomous and AI driving.
On 4 August 2025, JLR announced its new CEO, adding to the list of vast changes throughout the company.
JLRâs incoming CEO is PB Balaji, who is currently serving as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Tata Motors, and will be succeeding Adrian Mardell in November 2025.
"It is my privilege to lead this incredible company," says PB.
"Over the past 8 years I have grown to know and love this company and its redoubtable global brands.
"I look forward to working with the team to take it to even greater heights.
"I thank Adrian for his immense contributions and wish him well for his next innings.â
JLRâs new CEO update
Adrian announced his decision to retire in August after working at JLR for 35 years and serving as CEO for three years.
âThese three years have been a great privilege,â says Adrian.
âTogether with the incredible JLR workforce, we have cemented JLRâs position in the automotive industry during a time of incredible change.
âI would like to thank everyone in JLR and the extended Tata Group, and wish Balaji every success in his new role.â
The group has also announced the rebranding of Jaguar as an all-electric luxury marque and launching six fully electric Land Rover models by 2026, as part of its goal to become an âelectric first businessâ by 2025.
Trumpâs clash with âwokeâ JLR
In line with Adrianâs retirement, US President Donald Trump took to social media to write that JLR was in âabsolute turmoilâ and Adrian had left the firm âin disgraceâ.
Also on social media, President Trump called JLRâs recent marketing campaign âstupidâ and âwokeâ.
In line with net zero, Jaguar is aiming to reduce its emissions and advance in electrification.
âWe are transforming our business, targeting carbon net zero across our supply chain, products and operations by 2039,â writes JLR after investing ÂŁ500m (US$666.2m) into creating an EV factory in Merseyside.
âWe have set a roadmap to reduce emissions across our own operations and value chains by 2030 through approved, scienceâbased targets.
âElectrification is central to this strategy and before the end of the decade our Range Rover, Discovery, Defender collections will each have a pure electric model, while Jaguar will be entirely electric.â
Despite JLRâs advancements, Trump is calling to scrap key US climate and EV regulations.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), under the leadership of Administrator Lee Zeldin, has proposed to rescind the 2009 Endangerment Finding, a legal foundation underpinning federal GHG regulations for vehicles and engines.
Announced at an Indiana car dealership alongside high-profile officials including Secretary of Energy Chris Wright and Indiana Governor Mike Braun, the proposal signals a dramatic reversal in the nationâs climate policy.
To date, more than 100 regulations have been repealed or weakened, affecting clean air, water quality, vehicle emissions, hazardous chemical controls and wildlife conservation under Trumpâs presidency.
Sustainability at JLR
JLR aima to achieve net zero carbon emissions across its supply chain, products and operations by 2039.
Through its Reimagine strategy, the company is transitioning to electric vehicles, reducing waste and integrating circular economy principles across its business.
JLR also aims to halve value-chain carbon equivalent emissions by 2030 and achieve net zero by 2039.
Key initiatives include the systematic use of recycled aluminium (up to 75% content), non-leather interiors using sustainable materials, and enhanced recyclability and vehicle disassembly.
All UK manufacturing facilities now operate on 100% renewable electricity with zero waste sent to landfill.
Since 2007, manufacturing energy per vehicle has been cut by a third, and key development sites are certified carbon neutral.
JLR has driven more than ÂŁ100m (US$133m) in value from reuse initiatives, adopted tyres with more than 70% renewable or recycled materials, and established closed-loop aluminium recycling.
Alongside environmental targets, JLR has launched the JLR Foundation to support youth and vulnerable communities and continues to embed responsible supply chain practices across procurement and engineering.
While progress is significant, the company still faces challenges in aligning its overall greenhouse gas emissions with the most ambitious global climate goals.
