La Poste and Temu: Aiming to Create Sustainable Logistics

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between La Poste and ecommerce company Temu could signal a move towards more sustainable logistics within the European market.
The agreement is aimed at strengthening logistics collaboration and empowering local French sellers, with a strong focus on environmental responsibility.
Temu, which entered the French market in 2023, anticipates that local sellers and local fulfilment will constitute up to 80% of its European sales in the near future.
Sustainable logistics and carbon reduction
This move towards localisation is a key component of the MOU, potentially simplifying delivery networks and contributing to industry growth by reducing the reliance on long-haul international shipping.
By combining Temu’s marketplace with La Poste’s network, the partnership aims to make it easier for local sellers to expand their reach.
A Temu spokesperson says, "By combining Temu's marketplace with La Poste's trusted network, we can make it easier for local sellers to expand their reach in France and beyond".
As part of the agreement, La Poste’s logistics division Colissimo will apply its expertise and infrastructure to Temu's operations.
A central element of this collaboration is Colissimo's commitment to reducing its carbon emissions.
Colissimo is implementing strategies such as the increased use of electric vehicles, the adoption of eco-designed packaging and the development of urban delivery hubs.
These initiatives align with Temu's stated social responsibility goals and will be applied at scale to handle the volume of parcels generated by the ecommerce platform.
The partnership intends to make Temu's marketplace more reliable and efficient through these shared sustainability objectives.
Local fulfilment and network efficiency
The MOU introduces several new initiatives designed to improve the delivery process for consumers and sellers.
One of the core outcomes is a focus on reliable and flexible delivery.
The agreement ensures that consumers and sellers can be confident in using La Poste Colissimo, which will provide a range of options including home delivery, pickup points, lockers and post offices.
This diversification of delivery points allows for greater consolidation of shipments and more efficient routing, which can reduce fuel consumption and the number of failed delivery attempts.
Furthermore, the use of Colissimo's logistics platforms for warehousing and flow management is set to create a streamlined workflow, reducing the risk of disruption and improving overall operational efficiency, which can have positive environmental implications through optimised resource use.
Enabling sellers with greener solutions
A key feature of the collaboration is the launch of a 'Local-to-Local Domestic Delivery Service' which provides French sellers with an end-to-end shipping solution.
Colissimo will leverage its extensive distribution network to offer a range of delivery options, including same-day delivery in Paris, next-day delivery and delivery to retailers.
This focus on domestic fulfilment could support international growth for French sellers, particularly small and medium-sized businesses, by enabling them to reach consumers in different markets more sustainably.
"As France's leading postal and logistics provider, we are thrilled to partner with Temu to deliver innovative, sustainable and efficient solutions for sellers and consumers," adds Sanae Murschel, Vice President of International Sales at Colissimo, La Poste Group.
"This MOU empowers us to strengthen our collaboration with TEMU.
"By combining our delivery and logistics capabilities with TEMU's innovative digital solutions, we aim to provide more efficient, compliant and convenient services to both sellers and consumers across the markets we serve."
The collaboration between a state-owned logistics firm and a global ecommerce giant could provide a framework for creating more environmentally considered and efficient services in the markets they operate in.
